Title of the talk: Exploring organismal responses to environmental change
The complexity of natural environments makes predicting the effect of exogenous stress events on resident organisms nearly impossible, even for a single cell. In this talk, I describe laboratory-based approaches that use microfabrication to create relevant physical and chemical environments for aquatic microorganisms like phytoplankton and bacteria. The ability to observe these individuals and monitor their cellular physiologies under physico-chemical perturbations provides new possibilities for study and prediction in environmental toxicology, adaptive evolution and ecology. I will further discuss how these approaches will help improve our ability to assess chemical risk in aquatic habitats under forecasted climate change scenarios.
