Uterine leiomyomas, also called fibroids, cause a very significant burden to women’s health but relatively little has been known about the mechanisms of tumorigenesis involved. Researchers at the University of Helsinki and Karolinska Institutet have found specific mutations in a gene called MED12, which is an important step towards understanding why fibroids arise and how they can be treated.
