The course will provide insight into state-of-the-art technologies for proteome analyses in research and medicine via advanced molecular technologies, reagent resources and instrumentation. The course will be organized by the proteomics platforms at Science for Life Laboratory, Uppsala, and will convey, by lectures and hands-on training, information about established and emerging methods and technologies relevant in basic research and diagnostics. Affinity- and non-affinity-based methods for protein analyses will be covered.
The aim of the course is to introduce scientists at the Disciplinary domains of Medicine and Pharmacy and of Science and Technology and other interested scientists to novel and advanced technologies for proteome analysis offering powerful tools in basic research and diagnostics. The course is intended to facilitate networking between scientists and the newly formed proteomics platform at the SciLifeLab-Uppsala. Both affinity- and non-affinity-based methods for protein detection will be covered. Mass spectrometry will be used for unbiased and high-throughput protein discovery and characterization; different variants of proximity ligation assays (PLAs) will be used for sensitive detection of proteins and their interactions and modifications in solution or in situ; and the participants will be introduced to histopathology methods including tissue microarray production, immunohistochemistry and slide scanning, using techniques, reagents and sample resources from the Human Proteome Atlas project.
The theoretical moments will include lectures, seminars and discussions, and they will be combined with practical moments including introduction to mass spectrometry, solid phase- and in situ PLA, and immunohistochemistry with tissue microarray production and image analysis.
