National course. The purpose of the course is to prepare and train our users in sample preparation methods, introduce users to the image data acquisition workflow, expand knowledge about cryo-EM methods among Swedish researchers and finally show that everyone can learn how to use cryo-EM.
The course is open for facility users or potential facility users, such as PhD students, postdocs, senior researchers and other employees within the life sciences at any Swedish university who are curious about structure biology and will profit from cryo-EM skills. To attend, the course participants must have experience in basic electron microscopy and be familiar with structure or cell biology.
This course is supported by SciLifeLab and run by the SciLifeLab Cryo-EM facility, both UmU and SU nodes together.

During a 3-day course you will learn the basic theory and get introduced to the practical skills required to work with cryo-EM methods. The basic functions and technical properties of a transmission electron microscope used for cryo-EM will be introduced. You will discuss challenges and practice cryo-EM sample preparation. Different methods for data collection will be introduced; demonstrations of single particle and tomography methods and software at Titan Krios, the high-end instrument for cryo-EM at SciLifeLab in both Stockholm and Umeå. Approaches for initial image processing will be introduced as a computer tutorial. The course will host 15 participants, PhD students and Postdocs have priority. Prerequisite is a basic knowledge in EM and/or structure biology. Organized by the SciLifeLab cryo-EM facility at Umeå Core facility for Electron Microscopy. Please, only apply if you have time to participate for 3 full days.
A final schedule will be send out to the participants in advance. Other course material will be provided at the beginning of the course.
Prerequisite is a basic knowledge in EM and/or structure biology. PhD students and Postdocs with an ongoing or future project are prioritized. It is therefore important to briefly describe relevant projects when applying to this course.
