Gustaf Christofffersson received his MS (2007) and PhD (2013) degrees from Uppsala University. His early research focused on alternative roles of innate immune cells, particularly in promoting angiogenesis. For his postdoctoral training, he went to the La Jolla Institute for Immunology, where he worked on adaptive immunity in type 1 diabetes. In 2017 he returned to Uppsala University to start his own lab and since 2019 he holds a SciLifeLab Fellow position at the Department of Medical Cell Biology, focusing on local immune regulation in the pancreas during type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is characterized by a progressive loss of pancreatic beta cell function, culminating in patients’ dependence upon insulin injections to control blood glucose. The destruction of the beta cells is likely the result of a targeted attack by cytotoxic T lymphocytes, however what triggers this to occur and which immune-regulatory mechanisms are involved in controlling this are still not clear. In my lab, we are using intravital imaging to study the events occurring in the pancreas during onset of type 1 diabetes. We are currently pursuing a few new regulatory mechanisms involving non-classical functions of cytotoxic T lymphocytes, and neuro-immune connections at the pancreatic islets, respectively. In this talk, I will present our methodology as well as new insights into immune regulation during onset of type 1 diabetes. I will also present some ongoing efforts to extract detailed information from the islet microenvironment of both mice and humans.
