Dr. Marques-Bonet started his own lab in 2010 at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra after a Marie Curie fellowship in Seattle, University of Washington. In 2010 he obtained the competitive ERC Starting Grant 2010. The work of his group focuses on the analysis of genetic diversity in humans and great apes, with particular attention to characterizing human specific genomic characteristics, establishing methods for estimating selection on duplicated sequences, the evolution of epigenetics in humans, the impact of CNVs in phenotypic traits and most recently the use of non-invasive samples to study evolutionary processes in great apes. He has been part of many Genome Consortia (Neanderthal, Denisovan, Bonobo, Gorilla, Orangutan, Gibbon, Marmoset. Lynx, Cats, E-shark), leading the section of duplications and structural variation in most of them.
Despite great advances in sequencing technologies, our knowledge in population structure, phylogeny and adaptation of great apes is still very limited. Our group is contributing to a better understanding on SNP and CNV great ape diversity and demography using novel datasets of full genome sequences of a variety of great apes, including unexplored subspecies of chimpanzee, gorilla and orangutans. On top of that, we will discuss differential CpG methylation patterns between humans and great apes to discuss the relationship between DNA methylation changes and sequence evolution at both nucleotide and protein level.
