SUMMARY:[The Svedberg seminar] - Tissue Regulatory T cells
DESCRIPTION:Adrian Liston \n\n\n\nProfessorUniversity of Cambridge\, UK \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nAdrian Liston is Professor of Pathology at the University of Cambridge and Equalities Fellow at St Catharine’s College. Prof Liston is highly published in immunology and neuroimmunology\, in particular his work on regulatory T cells in the brain\, and manipulating the population for therapeutic benefit. He has been awarded fellowship to the Academy of Medical Sciences\, the Francqui Chair\, the Eppendorf Prize\, two Wellcome Trust awards and four ERC grants\, among other honours. Beyond his research\, Prof Liston is a prolific writer and workshop coordinator on the topics of navigating a science career and improving research culture. Finally\, Prof Liston is also an extensive public communicator\, including writing several illustrated books for children and designing educational computer games. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTissue Regulatory T cells\n\n\n\nTregs have well-defined roles in limiting systemic immune responses\, with additional functions for tissue-resident Tregs becoming increasingly apparent. These tissue-resident Tregs have diverse beneficial roles in tissue physiology\, such as aiding homeostasis and promoting tissue repair and regeneration. SUMMARY:Striving for Open Science Compliance in Sweden: Achieved Goals and Remaining Challenges
DESCRIPTION:DescriptionOpen Science is high on the Swedish research agenda\, but are we actually delivering increased openness? Join this seminar to find out what the latest data reveals about where progress is being made\, where it is stalling\, and what the findings mean for your own work with open access\, open data\, and research visibility. \n\n\n\nOpen Science has become increasingly embedded in Swedish research policy. Despite ambitious national targets\, Sweden did not achieve full open access to academic publications by 2021\, and open research data is unlikely to reach full implementation by 2026\, highlighting a persistent gap between policy ambitions and institutional practice. This presentation examines the implementation of Open Science in Swedish higher education institutions using longitudinal data from the SUHF Roadmap for Open Science surveys (2023–2025\, as published in https://doi.org/10.7557/11.8391)\, including newly available 2026 results. SUMMARY:Cryo-electron microscopy as a discovery tool in sperm biology
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Tzviya Zeev-Ben-Mordehai\, Utrecht University \n\n\n\nAbstract\n\n\n\nCryo-EM single-particle analysis (SPA) approaches typically entail overexpression and purification of the target complex. For that\, prior knowledge of the composition of the complex of interest is required. In the highly specialised sperm cell\, the molecular composition is often not known. During my talk\, I will show how we expand the range of samples attainable for SPA towards more native samples\, specifically towards complex macromolecular assemblies that cannot be reconstituted\, and show how SPA is used as a discovery tool in sperm biology. \n\n\n\nBiography\n\n\n\nAn expert in reproductive structural biology. Zeev-Ben-Mordehai received her PhD from the Weizmann Institute of Science in 2008. In 2015 she established her group in the Division of Structural Biology of Oxford University. Since 2017 her group is part of Bijvoet Centre for Biomolecular Research of Utrecht University. Her group developed the first cryo-ET workflow for mammalian sperm\, enabling molecularresolution imaging of flagellar ultrastructure across species. Her landmark studies have revealed the multi-scale architecture of mammalian sperm flagella (EMBO J 2021)\, structural specialisations of the sperm tail (Cell 2023)\, structural diversity of axonemes across mammalian motile cilia (Nature 2025)\, and in-cell structures at the mitochondria– cytoskeleton interface in sperm (PNAS 2021). DESCRIPTION:Beskrivning av samhällsfrågan \n\n\n\nDe stora europeiska digitala satsningarna inom biomedicin ger tillgång till miljontals DNA-sekvenser för forskning\, sjukvård och innovation – 1+MG (One Million Genome Initiative)\, GDI (Genomic Data Infrastructure) och GoE (Genome of Europe). \n\n\n\nUtökad information om evenemanget\n\n\n\nNu 2026 kommer en EDIC (European Digital Infrastructure Consortium) att bildas för att möjliggöra dessa satsningar. En Genom-EDIC är instrumentell för utveckling av precisionsmedicin med förbättrad hälso- och sjukvård samtidigt som den möjliggör avancerad forskning och förbättrad innovation. Sverige är ledande i flera av dessa projekt genom att bygga den digitala infrastrukturen. DESCRIPTION:From Folding to Function: How Trafficking Receptors Shape Membrane Protein Biogenesis.Speaker: Prof. Simion Newstead from Oxford University \n\n\n\nMembrane proteins perform essential cellular functions\, but before they reach their final destination\, they must fold correctly and pass stringent quality control in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). How cells coordinate membrane protein folding with selective export from the ER remains poorly understood. In this seminar\, I will discuss recent structural and mechanistic insights into the role of trafficking receptors in membrane protein biogenesis. Using cryo-electron microscopy alongside biochemical and cell-biological approaches\, we show how cornichon trafficking receptors recognise membrane-protein cargoes\, remodel the surrounding membrane\, and recruit the COPII machinery to drive ER export. These studies reveal trafficking receptors as active regulators of membrane protein maturation and provide a structural framework for understanding how membrane proteins are assembled and trafficked within the cell.

Many (most?) of the decisions are being taken by a few companies holding an inordinate amount of power\, and these shifts are potentially being normalised by expert and lay publics who may not know or feel they have any influence to push against the wave of change.  Based on examples taken from past (public) work developing evaluations of large language models for bioweapons information risks and some of my current work on the public discourse around the benefits and risks of developing A(G)I\, this presentation will address scientific and ethical details that are easily overlooked in the current A(G)I rush. \n\n\n\n*song title by Dylan B/Zimmerman RA. DESCRIPTION:For the fall’s first Spotlight seminar\, we are happy to welcome Professor Ute Hellmich from the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences\, Institute of Organic Chemistry and Macromolecular Chemistry (IOMC) at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena \n\n\n\nAbstract\n\n\n\nCells rely on membrane receptors to detect and integrate diverse environmental signals. Ligands such as small molecules\, peptides or ions trigger conformational changes that regulate downstream signalling cascades. This classic\, 3D-centric view is challenged by the finding that nearly half of the human proteome is predicted to be intrinsically disordered. \n\n\n\nMany membrane receptors\, including most Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) channels\, contain large intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) whose dynamic nature has severely hampered structural characterization. Therefore\, the contribution of IDRs to signal sensing remains poorly understood and the structural dimensions of TRP channels are notoriously underestimated. \n\n\n\nHere\, using an integrated structural biology approach\, we show that disordered channel regions contribute to multipartite signalling networks of plasma membrane and lysosomal TRP ion channels and play crucial roles in lipid-dependent functional regulation. Recent work from his lab identified synthetic cell programs to enhance cell and gene therapies and developed new methods to identify causal noncoding variants and their target genes at scale. T-cell–mediated anti-tumor immunity relies on potent cytotoxic effector function\, whereas durable tumor clearance depends on stemness-driven long-term persistence. However\, endogenous T-cell differentiation programs render these phenotypes mutually exclusive: Effector maturation physiologically depletes the stem-like reservoir. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells\, despite their impact on blood cancer treatment\, remain bound by this intrinsic biological trade-off. \n\n\n\nTo identify new genetic programs for effective cell therapy\, we overexpressed ~12\,000 barcoded human open reading frames (ORFs) and measured their impact on proliferation of primary human CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells. When overexpressed\, the top-ranked ORF\, lymphotoxin beta receptor (LTBR)\, induced profound transcriptional and epigenomic remodelling\, increasing T-cell effector functions\, as well as resistance to exhaustion in chronic stimulation settings\, via constitutive activation of the canonical NF-kB pathway. \n\n\n\nUsing this gene\, we develop a novel CAR that decouples effector differentiation from the loss of stemness. Direct fusion of the intracellular domain of the T-cell proliferation driver LTBR to the CD3ζ tail induces a shared pro-inflammatory effector program in both CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ CAR T cells. In the CD4⁺ compartment\, this effector differentiation is accompanied by an overlay of stemness-associated gene modules (TCF7 and LEF1)\, resulting in a superimposed state where pro-inflammatory and self-renewal programs coexist. This dual phenotype is dependent on the CAR configuration and is not recapitulated by LTBR co-expression. In CAR T cells engineered from diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients\, the LTBR-fusion CAR sustains tumor suppression after several rounds of repetitive tumor challenge. This lineage-specific phenotype is consistent with clinical observations linking durable remissions to persistent\, effector-competent CD4⁺ CAR T cells. Together\, our CAR engineering approach overrides canonical T cell differentiation constraints to yield dysfunction-resistant therapies\, elucidating the functional basis of lineage-specific CD4⁺ CAR T-cell responses. \n\n\n\nHost: Sanja Vickovic sanja.vickovic@scilifelab.uu.se UU

SUMMARY:Massively-parallel approaches to understand the human noncoding genome and transcriptome
DESCRIPTION:Professor Neville Sanjana\, NYU\, United States \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract\n\n\n\nProfessor Sanjana will present recent work from his lab on two topics: variant-to-function challenges in noncoding genomics and the development of RNA-targeting CRISPR screens to pinpoint functional noncoding RNAs.  \n\n\n\nFirst\, since most disease-associated GWAS variants map to noncoding regions\, we combined ancestrally diverse biobanks\, massively parallel CRISPR screens\, and single-cell sequencing to identify 124 target genes across 91 blood trait loci — enabling large-scale characterization of human GWAS variants and mechanisms. This work is part of an ongoing collaboration with Prof. Tuuli Lappalainen (KTH and SciLifeLab).  \n\n\n\nSecond\, while thousands of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are transcribed\, less than 1% have established roles. Using RNA-targeting CRISPR-Cas13 screens\, we evaluated 5\,500 lncRNAs across five cell lines and identified 788 essential lncRNAs. Most function independently of neighboring protein-coding genes and exhibit dynamic expression during development. Finally\, their expression in primary tumors correlates with patient survival\, highlighting their potential as clinical biomarkers and therapeutic targets. \n\n\n\nBiography\n\n\n\nNeville Sanjana\, PhD\, is a Core Faculty Member at the New York Genome Center and Professor of Biology\, Neuroscience and Physiology at New York University. Recent work from his lab identified synthetic cell programs to enhance cell and gene therapies and developed new methods to identify causal noncoding variants and their target genes at scale. Dr. Sanjana is a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Engineers and Scientists\, AAAS Wachtel Prize for Cancer Research\, the NIH’s New Innovator Award\, the Cancer Research Institute Technology Impact Award\, the DARPA Young Faculty Award\, the Kimmel Scholar Award\, the MRA Young Investigator Award\, and also is a Leichtung Family Investigator of the Brain and Behavior Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Messy and inconsistent data is a common challenge in research\, often making it difficult to analyse\, share\, and reuse data effectively. Improving data quality is therefore a key step towards more reproducible research and better alignment with Open Science and FAIR principles. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, we will introduce OpenRefine\, an open-source tool designed to help researchers explore\, clean\, and transform messy tabular data. OpenRefine is particularly useful for working with spreadsheets and datasets containing inconsistencies such as duplicate entries\, varying formats\, or typographical errors. \n\n\n\nWe will begin with a short introduction to the types of data challenges OpenRefine can address\, followed by a live demonstration showing how to work with real data. SUMMARY:Synthetic DNA for in-product data storage and cryptography
DESCRIPTION:Robert Grass\, Functional Materials Laboratory\, Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences\, ETH Zurich \n\n\n\nShort abstract:DNA data storage has emerged as technical solution to store digital data at very high data densities. In addition\, data in DNA can be rendered stable for long time horizons by the application of nanotechnological preservation technologies\, using both sol-gel as well as metal organic framework approaches. In practical terms\, DNA data storage offers data stability for hundreds of years and data densities exceeding 40 exabytes per gram. While this brings opportunities in the field of cloud storage applications\, our research focuses more on ideas in combining DNA data storage with materials. It is our ultimate goal to give materials a digital identity. We have so far investigated applications in 3d printing\, pharmaceuticals\, construction materials and polymer recycling. I will not only be discussing the technical advantages and limitations\, but will also touch on practicability and technology commercialisation aspects. I will conclude the presentation on a second class of lesser-known digital technologies\, which uses physical and chemical randomness to create unclonable functions\, and allows a discussion of physical randomness in the context of digital cryptography.

SUMMARY:The PROMISE Initiative: Accelerating Cancer Innovation
DESCRIPTION:This conference focuses on the PROMISE Cancer effort led by Swedish scientists representing Stockholm\, Uppsala\, Umeå\, Linköping\, Lund\, and Gothenburg as well as SciLifeLab. \n\n\n\nThe goal of the conference is to expand the PROMISE Cancer initiative\, promote its efforts\, and continue building the Swedish cancer community. \n\n\n\nAbout PROMISE\n\n\n\nPrecision Omics Initiative Sweden (PROMISE) is a national initiative using genomics and multiomics to understand common diseases\, rare diseases\, and cancer. \n\n\n\nRead more about PROMISE\n\n\n\nProgram and speakers\n\n\n\nCancer encompasses more than 200 distinct diseases\, each with widely varying prognoses\, ranging from highly treatable to aggressive cancers with poor outcomes. Advances in molecular profiling hold great promise for improving diagnostics and treatment by enabling more precise\, personalized approaches tailored to individual patients. Sweden has world-leading cancer registries and high-quality biobanks\, creating unique opportunities for cancer research. By engineering the tumor microenvironment using and oncolytic adenoviral gene vector encoding TMZ-CD40L and 4-1BBL (LOAd703)\, we aim to rewire the immunosuppressive state in the patients to drive anti-tumor immune responses allowing for continued immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment of refractor patients and/or ICI treatment of indications previously not responding to ICI. LOAd703 plus ICI have been tested in melanoma patients (n=24) refractory to one or several lines of prior ICI\, and in pancreatic cancer patients (LOAd703 +standard chemotherapy\, n=21; LOAd703 + ICI + standard chemotherapy\, n=24) who are commonly not responding to ICI. In these Phase I/II clinical trials blood and biopsies were analyzed for the initiation of immune responses locally in the tumor microenvironment as well as systemically in blood. \n\n\n\nThe treatment was well tolerated with common adverse events related to chemotherapy (pancreatic cancer) or ICI (melanoma and pancreatic cancer). LOAd703 attributed adverse events included fever\, chills\, and cytokine release syndrome\, mostly grade 1 or 2. Both in melanoma and pancreatic cancer\, LOAd703 promoted a typical Th1 type of immune response post treatment initiation which was noted both in the tumor and in blood. Similarly\, tumor responses were noted in both indications as evaluated with Olink proteomics\, NanoString Technology\, and flow cytometry. In conclusion\, LOAd703 can be used together with chemotherapy and/or ICI treatment to rewire the immunosuppressive state in patients towards Th1 immunity and subsequently controlling tumor growth in patients. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nProf. Ari Molofsky\nDepartment of Laboratory Medicine\, University of California\, San Francisco \n\n\n\nTitle: Fibroblast – Immune niches in health and disease. \n\n\n\nBiosketch: Ari Molofsky received a BS with highest honors from the University of Texas at Austin and an MD/PhD with research distinction from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Dr. Molofsky completed residency and fellowship in Clinical Pathology/Hematopathology and now leads a tissue immunology-focused research group in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at UCSF. Dr. Molofsky’s research goals are to understand the regulation and function of tissue-resident immune cells to define novel pathways that can be targeted across diverse human diseases. These tissue-resident immune cells are early organizers of tissue remodeling and first responders during tissue damage and infection\, positioning them as key mediators of tissue health and disease. The Molofsky lab has defined a stromal-immune niche surrounding larger vessels and other border structures in multiple tissues\, including the lungs and brain. They are using 3D quantitative microscopy\, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics\, and cytokine reporters/manipulators to dissect these critical immune-microenvironment interactions\, with a particular focus on bidirectional interactions with fibroblasts. Dr. Molofsky has published papers spanning microbial pathogenesis\, tissue-resident immunity\, and local immune niches. Dr. Molofsky is actively involved in trainee education and teaching and leads the UCSF medical school immunology course. Dr. Molofsky routinely serves as an ad hoc reviewer for multiple journals and is a standing member of the NIH Innate Immunity study section. \n\n\n\nAbstract: \n\n\n\n\nProf. Bernd Bodenmiller\nUniversity of Zurich and ETH Zurich\, Switzerland \n\n\n\nTitle:  \n\n\n\nBiosketch: Bernd Bodenmiller is a quantitative biologist who develops novel experimental and computational approaches for the quantitative analysis of tumor ecosystems to improve our understanding of the mechanisms of tumor development for the benefit of patients. He is the founding director of the Department of Quantitative Biomedicine (DQBM) at the University of Zurich\, which fosters research and education at the interface of biomedical research\, biotechnology\, and computational biology to guide development of next-generation precision medicine. Prof. Bodenmiller obtained his PhD in the group of Ruedi Aebersold at ETH Zürich. For his postdoctoral training\, he joined the laboratory of Garry P. Nolan at Stanford University. In 2012\, he became a group leader and in 2013 an SNF/ERC assistant professor at the University of Zürich. In 2019\, he was tenured and became the founding director of the DQBM. In October 2020 Prof. Bodenmiller has been appointed as Dual Professor for Quantitative Biomedicine at the UZH and at ETH Zurich. His group pioneered the development of imaging mass cytometry\, an approach that enables simultaneously imaging of over 40 proteins and transcripts in tumor tissues (Nat. Methods\, 2014; Cell Systems\, 2017; Nature 2020) and the histoCAT software toolbox (Nat. Methods\, 2017). His groups applies these methods to unravel how cells in the tumor ecosystem drive cancer development to identify mechanisms that might be exploited for therapeutic targeting (Nat. Biotechnology\, 2017\, Cell\, 2017; Cell\, 2019). \n\n\n\n\nProf. Göran Jönsson\nLund University \n\n\n\nTitle: Exploring the role of the anti-tumor immune response in tumor initiation and therapy response in melanoma \n\n\n\nBiosketch: Göran Jönsson is a professor in molecular oncology at Lund University. His research has for many years been based on strong collaboration between basic- and clinician scientists in truly translational projects. Considering this and his background in state-of-the art genomic technologies and applying that on human melanoma tissue puts him in a perfect position to conduct research that will generate groundbreaking findings. This is further substantiated by the group’s publication in Nature (2020). Göran is a faculty member of ESMO (European Society of Medical Oncology) and have an extensive international network. He is frequently invited to large international meetings and acts as a reviewer to several funding agencies and high-impact journals such as Nature. Göran has also been the recipient of Young and Senior Investigator Awards from the Swedish Cancer Society and more recently was awarded with the Göran Gustafsson prize in medicine 2022 from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Cancer Researcher of the year (2023) from the Swedish Cancer Society. \n\n\n\nAbstract: \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nProf. José Ignacio Martín-Subero\nIDIBAPS\, Spain \n\n\n\nTitle: \n\n\n\nBiosketch: In 2001\, I obtained my PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Navarra on genetics of lymphoid neoplasms under the supervision of Prof. Maria J Calasanz and co-supervision of Prof. Reiner Siebert from the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel. After that\, I continued my studies on lymphoma genetics as postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Siebert. In 2005\, I became interested in the field of epigenomics and in 2009 I came back to Spain. After a short stay at the IDIBELL\, I went to the UB/IDIBAPS to start my career as independent researcher embedded in the group of Prof. Elias Campo. In 2016\, I was appointed Junior Leader of the Biomedical Epigenomics group at the IDIBAPS and from November 2018 I am ICREA Research Professor at the IDIBAPS. Please proceed to the 6th floor and hang your poster at your designated number. A numbered poster list will be provided closer to the event date. \n\n\n\nPoster sessions \n\n\n\nPoster Session I: During the morning coffee break\, presenters of posters with odd numbers (1\, 3\, 5\, 7…) should be present by their posters. \n\n\n\nPoster Session II: During the afternoon break\, presenters of posters with even numbers (2\, 4\, 6\, 8…) should be present by their posters. \n\n\n\nBest Poster Award \n\n\n\nAll poster presenters should attend the Best Poster Award ceremony at the end of the conference\, where the Best Poster Award will be announced. The Poster Jury will read the abstracts and evaluate the posters throughout the day based on (a) Quality of Science (b) Design (c) Capacity to explain the work. The Poster Jury will select the 2026 Science Summit Best Poster and award the winner a 5\,000 SEK Travel Grant (conditions apply). \n\n\n\nFlash Talks (5-min research pitch) selected from Abstracts. \n\n\n\nThe abstracts will be published on the event website and used to select Flash Talks (5-min research pitch).  \n\n\n\nDismount of posters \n\n\n\nPlease remove your poster immediately after the closing session at 5:00 PM.
