SUMMARY:AI for Breast Cancer Risk Prediction
DESCRIPTION:I will describe the shortcomings of current breast cancer screening programs which are based on mammography for everyone. I will discuss how we developed an approach based on artificial intelligence to analyze mammograms of supposedly healthy women. The system considers three aspects\, long-term risk\, mammographic masking and subtle cancer signs. We developed the method\, analyzed the performance in retrospective data and performed a clinical study – ScreenTrustMRI. Given the same budget of additional MRI\, the AI approach detected around four times more cancers than would have been expected from established methods based on simplistic estimates of mammographic density. \n\n\n\nFredrik Strand\, Karolinska Institutet \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nregistration\n\n\n\nClinical Talks \n\n\n\nClinical Talks is an educational seminar series open to everyone. It is organized by the SciLifeLab Precision Medicine Capability\, and invites a mixture of speakers that are experts with a clinical perspective on topics concerning rare diseases\, cancer\, microbiology and bioinformatics. \n\n\n\nHealth is individual and patients can benefit greatly from personalized treatments\, tailored for their specific molecular disposition. This rapidly emerging field\, known as Precision Medicine\, relies on technology development and requires close collaboration between scientists and healthcare professionals. SciLifeLab aims to bring cutting-edge technologies\, first-class expertise and data infrastructure to build the foundation of tomorrow’s Precision Medicine.

SUMMARY:Clusters\, gene flow and artificial genotypes - looking at population structure from a deep learning angle
DESCRIPTION:NBIS\, Scilifelab’s Bioinformatics platform\, arranges an open AI and IO Seminar Series aimed at knowledge-sharing about Artificial Intelligence and Integrative Omics (AI & IO) analysis and applications in the Life Science community. The seminar series is open to everyone. The seminar is run over Zoom on the third Friday of the month during academic terms\, typically between 10 and 11 am\, with ca. 45 min long presentation and 15 min discussion. \n\n\n\nFor further info\, please see this website. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClusters\, gene flow and artificial genotypes: looking at population structure from a deep learning angle\n\n\n\nMarcin Kierzcak\, NBIS\, Uppsala University \n\n\n\nWe will look at different ways of modelling and visualising population structure based on genomic kinship. Starting from more traditional approaches like PCA or MDS as benchmark\, we will see how one can build more complex deep learning-based models (autoencoders) and we will discuss when such approach can be beneficial. Finally\, we are going to see how generative deep learning (VAEs) can be used to augment original input data with some artificially-generated individuals with desired pre-defined kinship relationships. \n\n\n\nsee further on the session page https://scilifelab.atlassian.net/l/cp/oR289EJK for updates. \n\n\n\nHope to see you all on this exciting talk on Friday\, \n\n\n\nClick here to join zoom conference

SUMMARY:[The Svedberg seminar] - Spatial biodiversity modeling with remote sensing and AI
DESCRIPTION:Tobias Andermann \n\n\n\nAssistant Professor\, DDLS fellowUppsala University \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nTobias Andermann is a biodiversity researcher dedicated to providing data and computatio- nal tools for combating the global biodiversity crisis. His group\, the Biodiversity Data Lab\, is working on the intersection of molecular biology\, spatial ecology\, and machine learning\, with the mission to provide a more comprehensive view on the distribution of biodiversity\, including hidden diversity of inconspicuous and even undescribed species through the use of environmental DNA. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpatial biodiversity modeling with remote sensing and AI\n\n\n\nThere is an ever-increasing need for developing standardized ways of quantifying the biodiversity value of a site. This need arises from international and local policies (e.g. the COP15 UN Biodiversity agreement) as well as from the independent investments of companies world-wide in developing biodiversity-positive profiles\, motivated by their public perception. This momentum provides an unprecedented opportunity to efficiently protect biodiversity on a large scale to turn around the alarmingly negative biodiversity trends of the recent decades and centuries. While individual biodiversity assessments for specific sites can be done through targeted inventories\, either through taxonomic experts or increasingly through the use of environmental DNA\, we also need ways of scaling up such biodiversity evaluations to larger scales\, covering entire regions or countries. AI models provide a unique tool to leverage complex biodiversity and remote sensing data to make predictions of biodiversity on large spatial scales\, while at the same time providing high spatial resolution. In this talk I will present some of these models from my ongoing research and discuss their utility\, as well as their current shortcomings and limitations. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHost: Joëlle Rüegg joelle.ruegg@ebc.uu.se\, UU

SUMMARY:Modulation of Innate Immunity by Dengue Viruses: Feeling the STING
DESCRIPTION:Professor Ana Fernandez-Sesma obtained her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Salamanca\, Spain\, and the Icahn School of Medicine Mount Sinai in New York. Professor Fernandez-Sesma is currently the Department Chair of the Department of Microbiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) in New York. \n\n\n\nHer research focuses on the modulation of the innate immune system by viruses with public health potential such as Dengue (DENV)\, Influenza (IAV)\, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)\, Zika (ZIKV)\, and SARS-CoV-2. The goal of their studies is to understand the evasion mechanisms used by viruses to escape the immune system and establish infection in humans. Dr. Fernandez-Sesma’s research has greatly contributed to fundamental areas of virology\, biology\, and immunology using primary cell systems of dendritic cells (DCs) and macrophages\, as well as lung epithelial cells combining immunology and molecular techniques.  \n\n\n\nMore information here: https://labs.icahn.mssm.edu/fernandez-sesma-lab/

SUMMARY:Extracellular vesicles in cancer therapy-role of checkpoint molecules
DESCRIPTION:Susanne Gabrielsson \n\n\n\nProfessorKarolinska Institutet \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nProf. Gabrielsson has after her PhD at Stockholm University and a postdoc at the Curie Institute in Paris\, established a group dedicated to extracellular vesicle (EV)/exosome research at the Karolinska Institutet. She has been a pioneer in the field of immune effects of exosomes. Dr. Gabrielsson was the first to describe the presence of exosomes in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid\, as well as in breast milk. Her work has revealed that EVs are major players in lung diseases such as asthma and sarcoidosis\, where they contribute to inflammation. Her studies in animal models give new insights into how EV based therapies can be optimized for immunotherapeutic applications in cancer. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nExtracellular vesicles in cancer therapy-role of checkpoint molecules\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe talk will focus on their work to use EVs for cancer therapy. They lately showed that EVs can induce response to checkpoint inhibitors in a treatment refractory model (Veerman et al\, 2023)\, and they are now investigating the role of PD-1 and PD-L1 on EVs by investigating immune responses to EVs from PD-1 and PD-L1 KO mice. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHost: Masood Kamali-Moghaddam masood.kamali@igp.uu.se\, UU

SUMMARY:Theranostics- the use of radiolabelled compounds for therapy and diagnosis
DESCRIPTION:Theranostics. Image Courtesy of Marika Nestor.\n\n\n\nWelcome to a symposium arranged by the Drug Discovery and Development platform together with the Department of Immunology\, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University and the Department of Oncology and Pathology at Karolinska Institutet. You can expect to learn and discuss different topics reaching from selecting a target for therapy\, the research process to develop a candidate drug to the regulatory framework for theranostics. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTheranostics is a term used to describe when radioactive drugs are used as diagnostic and therapeutic pairs. Receptors that are overexpressed in the diseased tissue\, e.g. tumors\, are used to guide the drug to the target. The radiation can then either be used to for imaging or for therapy depending on the radionuclide used. Developing a theranostic agent could be a feasible way to reach the clinic and SciLifeLab is well suited to catalyze this process. We have gathered renowned speakers to discuss different aspects of the process from bench to bedside. We envision to inspire researcher with clinically relevant ideas to consider this relatively new technique as a feasible approach to reach the clinic. We also hope to gather researchers that are already in the field as well as infrastructure personnel. \n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n9.00-9.20 Welcome and Introduction to SciLifeLab \n\n\n\n9.20-10.10 “Theranostics and Radiomolecular Precision Oncology: Navigating the Past and Charting the Future of Nuclear Medicine.” (Professor Richard Baum\, Curanosticum\, Wiesbaden-Frankfurt)  \n\n\n\n10.10-10.40 Coffee and posters  \n\n\n\n10.40-11.20 Why We Need New Targets for Radiopharmaceutical Therapy – and How to Find Them (Assistant Professor Kasper Karlsson\, KI)   \n\n\n\n11.20-12 ” Translating innovation: Advancing the cancer radiopharmaceutical 177Lu-AKIR001 to clinical trials” (Professor Marika Nestor\, UU)  \n\n\n\n12-13.00 Lunch and posters  \n\n\n\n13.00-13.40 Dosimetry for Biologists: From Mouse Model Extrapolations to Considerations for Implementation of Radiopharmaceuticals in Clinical Practice (Professor Peter Bernhardt\, GU) \n\n\n\n13.40-14.20 Theranostics from a Regulatory Perspective (Dr Anna Sundlöf\, Clinical Assessor\, Swedish Medical Product Agency) \n\n\n\n14.20-15 Development of a Theranostic Product Pair for Patients with HER2 Expressing Disease: An Industrial Perspective (Professor Fredrik Frejd\, CSO\, Affibody AB)  \n\n\n\n15.00-15.30 Coffee and posters \n\n\n\n15.30-16.00 Theranostic Specific Infrastructures for Your Research/Project: From Bench to Bedside – Associate professor Thuy Tran and Associate Professor Renske Altena\, KI \n\n\n\n16.00-16.30 Panel Discussion \n\n\n\n16.30 Concluding Remarks \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOrganizing committee\n\n\n\nMarika Nestor\, Uppsala UniversityThuy Tran\, Karolinska InstitutetJonas Rehn\, Elekta Ulrika Yngve\, SciLifeLab Drug Discovery and Development Platform
