SUMMARY:Exploring the Protein Universe via Highly Accurate Structural Predictions
DESCRIPTION:Speaker\n\n\n\nMartin Steinegger\, Seoul National University \n\n\n\nAbstract\n\n\n\nUnderstanding relationships and functions of proteins at a global scale is key to unlocking newbiological insights. Through next-generation structure predictors like AlphaFold2 and ESMfold\,we now have access to an unprecedented volume of protein structures\, providing a crucialfoundation to address this challenge. In this talk\, I will present how our computationalmethods ColabFold\, MMseqs2\, and Foldseek together allow extraction of biological insightsfrom protein sequences and structures at nearly billion-scale. Additionally\, I will demonstratehow protein language models combined with sparse experimental data can guide andprioritize experimental efforts\, enabling efficient iterative “lab-in-the-loop” research.Together\, these tools democratize computational analysis and significantly acceleratediscoveries in protein biology.

\n\n\n\nMedverkande\n\n\n\n\nÅsa Johansson\, Dr.\, Uppsala Universitet\, SciLifeLab\, GMS\n\n\n\nRichard Rosenquist Brandell\, Professor\, GMS\, Karolinska Institutet\, Karolinska sjukhuset\n\n\n\nTuuli Lappalainen\, Professor\, KTH\, SciLifeLab

SUMMARY:Mithrl AI Co-Scientist for Accelerating Biological Discovery.
DESCRIPTION:Vivek Adarsh\, Mithrl \n\n\n\nNBIS and SciLifeLab Data Centre arrange an open SciLifeLab AI Seminar Series aimed at knowledge-sharing about Artificial Intelligence and applications in the Life Science community. The seminar series is open to everyone. The seminar is run over Zoom on the third Friday of the month during academic terms\, typically between 10 and 11 am\, with approx. 45 min presentation and 15 min discussion. \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nDespite the explosion of biological data from sequencing\, imaging\, and high-throughput experiments\, extracting meaningful insights remains slow\, manual\, and heavily reliant on limited bioinformatics resources. Scientists often encounter bottlenecks that delay decision-making and limit the scope of discovery. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, we introduce the concept of an AI Co-Scientist—a set of autonomous agents that collaborates with researchers to analyze data\, generate hypotheses\, and uncover novel insights in minutes rather than months. We’ll explore real-world use cases where AI systems assist with tasks ranging from experimental planning and data preprocessing to functional analysis and scientific interpretation. We’ll also address practical challenges\, including data quality\, trust in AI-generated results\, hallucinations\, and integration into existing research workflows. By the end of the session\, you’ll have a clearer understanding of how AI can partner with scientists to accelerate progress in the life sciences.

SUMMARY:[Spotlight seminar] Beyond Biological Sequence Space
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Klára Hlouchová\, Charles University in Prague\, Czech Republic \n\n\n\nJoin us for an inspiring seminar with Dr. Klara Hlouchová\, whose pioneering work delves deep into the “dark protein space“—the vast universe of unevolved amino acid sequences rarely touched by nature. Her group is using cutting-edge bioinformatics and experimental strategies to explore how early proteins formed using a primitive alphabet of just ~10 amino acids\, and whether such minimal sets could support the folds and functions we see today. This seminar promises not just a glimpse into the origins of the protein world\, but also fresh insights into the evolving logic of the genetic code and protein design. It’s a rare opportunity to connect with prebiotic molecular evolution at its most fundamental level. \n\n\n\nHost: Ilaria Piazza\, Ilaria.piazza@scilifelab.se

SUMMARY:[The Svedberg seminar] - Liquid Biopsy: From Discovery to Clinical Application
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Alix-Panabières \n\n\n\nProfessor of OncologyUniversity Medical Center of Montpellier\, France \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCatherine Alix-Panabières is a Professor of Oncology and the Director of the ‘Laboratoire de Cellules Circulantes Humaines Rares et Biopsie Liquide’ (LCCRH) at Montpellier University Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine. Since 2022\, she has also held the position of Professor at the University of Hamburg in Germany. A specialist in circulating tumor cell (CTC) research for 26 years\, she is credited with coining the term “liquid biopsy” in 2010\, in collaboration with Prof. Pantel. Professor Alix-Panabières instructs students in this subject at academic institutions in France and abroad\, has organized numerous international conferences\, has published over 165 scientific articles and numerous chapters in books and encyclopedias\, has filed three patents and has collaborated on numerous European\, American\, and Asian research projects. Her most significant contribution is the demonstration of the clinical utility of CTCs in breast cancer. She has been the recipient of numerous accolades in France and abroad\, including the “Gallet et Breton” prize in 2012 and the “Berthe Péan\, Antoine et Claude Béclère” prize in 2023\, bestowed by the Académie Nationale de Médecine. In 2022\, she played a pivotal role in the cancer exhibition at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie (Paris)\, which was curated by the National Institute of Cancer (INCa). Furthermore\, the esteemed journal Nature\, in its December 2020 issue\, acknowledged the significance of liquid biopsy as a pivotal advancement in cancer research over the past two decades and showcased the contributions of Prof. Alix-Panabières throughout her career. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLiquid Biopsy: From Discovery to Clinical Application\n\n\n\nThis lecture explores how circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) have transformed cancer research and clinical care. I will provide an overview of current technologies for detecting these biomarkers\, detailing their biology and their role in real-time monitoring of cancer progression. Advances now enable genomic\, transcriptomic\, and proteomic profiling of CTCs\, as well as functional studies using patient-derived cell lines. Likewise\, ctDNA offers a non-invasive method to track tumor evolution and minimal residual disease. The lecture will highlight how CTC and ctDNA analyses have deepened our understanding of metastasis and therapy response. Expanding the definition of liquid biopsy to include tumor-induced immune components—such as immune cells\, cytokines\, and interleukins—could offer a more comprehensive view\, particularly in the context of immunotherapy. I will conclude by discussing how CTC and ctDNA research uncovers mechanisms of immune escape and may guide the development of innovative strategies to improve cancer treatment. \n\n\n\nHost: Masood Kamali-Moghaddam masood.kamali@igp.uu.se
