In 2011\, Wilbert returned to the Netherlands to open his independent research lab at the NKI studying hormone-dependent cancers\, focusing on hormone receptor biology\, epigenetics\, and gene regulation. His projects have a ‘full circle’ design\, connecting basic scientific discoveries\, translational research\, and clinical trials. SUMMARY:One Health on Two Wheels: From Thessaloniki to Stockholm to Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance and Build Microbiology Capacity in Mbujimayi\, DRC
DESCRIPTION:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat with major epidemiological consequences across human\, animal\, and environmental health.  \n\n\n\nThis lecture will first outline the current global burden and trends of AMR. It will then explore key drivers of rising resistance through a One Health lens\, explaining how interconnected systems—medicine\, veterinary practice\, agriculture\, and the environment—contribute to its emergence and spread. Particular attention will be given to low-resource settings\, where the impact of AMR is greatest and diagnostic capacity remains limited. AI agents are emerging as autonomous systems that orchestrate scientific workflows by interacting with digital tools and data sources. These have various implications for life science research. They can\, for example\, simplify complex analyses by automating data integration\, run computational models\, and coordinate experimental steps\, making research pipelines more efficient and reproducible. In this on-site hands-on workshop held at Korallrevet\, Natrium building (Medicinaregatan 7B) in Gothenburg\, we will introduce and discuss AI Agents in life science\, and engage in collaborative practical sessions. DESCRIPTION:Adrian Liston \n\n\n\nProfessorUniversity of Cambridge\, UK \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nAdrian Liston is Professor of Pathology at the University of Cambridge and Equalities Fellow at St Catharine’s College. Prof Liston is highly published in immunology and neuroimmunology\, in particular his work on regulatory T cells in the brain\, and manipulating the population for therapeutic benefit. He has been awarded fellowship to the Academy of Medical Sciences\, the Francqui Chair\, the Eppendorf Prize\, two Wellcome Trust awards and four ERC grants\, among other honours. Beyond his research\, Prof Liston is a prolific writer and workshop coordinator on the topics of navigating a science career and improving research culture. Finally\, Prof Liston is also an extensive public communicator\, including writing several illustrated books for children and designing educational computer games. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTissue Regulatory T cells\n\n\n\nTregs have well-defined roles in limiting systemic immune responses\, with additional functions for tissue-resident Tregs becoming increasingly apparent. These tissue-resident Tregs have diverse beneficial roles in tissue physiology\, such as aiding homeostasis and promoting tissue repair and regeneration. In this talk Prof Liston will discuss the molecular features and cellular kinetics that drive tissue residency for Tregs\, and the potential for clinical translation. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHost: Kailash Singh kailash.singh@mcb.uu.se

SUMMARY:Striving for Open Science Compliance in Sweden: Achieved Goals and Remaining Challenges
DESCRIPTION:DescriptionOpen Science is high on the Swedish research agenda\, but are we actually delivering increased openness? Join this seminar to find out what the latest data reveals about where progress is being made\, where it is stalling\, and what the findings mean for your own work with open access\, open data\, and research visibility. \n\n\n\nOpen Science has become increasingly embedded in Swedish research policy. Despite ambitious national targets\, Sweden did not achieve full open access to academic publications by 2021\, and open research data is unlikely to reach full implementation by 2026\, highlighting a persistent gap between policy ambitions and institutional practice. This presentation examines the implementation of Open Science in Swedish higher education institutions using longitudinal data from the SUHF Roadmap for Open Science surveys (2023–2025\, as published in https://doi.org/10.7557/11.8391)\, including newly available 2026 results. Men avancerad testning kräver specialistkompetens och strukturer för tolkning av stora datamängder. Hur säkerställer vi jämlik tillgång till rätt testning och rätt behandling i hela landet? \n\n\n\nUtökad information om evenemanget\n\n\n\nMolecular Tumour Board (MTB) är en central funktion i modern cancervård där multidisciplinära expertteam tolkar komplex genetisk information för att kunna välja rätt behandling till rätt patient. Men tillgången till både avancerad genetisk testning och till expertis inom MTB varierar i landet. Detta riskerar att förstärka ojämlikheter i cancervården och försvåra implementeringen av precisionsmedicin i klinisk praxis. En Genom-EDIC är instrumentell för utveckling av precisionsmedicin med förbättrad hälso- och sjukvård samtidigt som den möjliggör avancerad forskning och förbättrad innovation. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 3rd edition of the Integrated Structural Biology course\, organized by SciLifeLab and NordStruct. The course will take place over two weeks across Stockholm\, Linköping\, Lund\, and Gothenburg. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the course\, you will be introduced to a wide range of structural biology techniques available at research infrastructures in Sweden. The program combines lectures\, site visits\, and hands-on discussions\, offering opportunities for in-depth learning\, networking\, and project-specific discussions with experts. \n\n\n\nIn addition to the scientific program\, the course includes social activities such as dinners and informal gatherings\, providing further opportunities to connect with fellow participants and instructors. \n\n\n\nThe course will cover: \n\n\n\n\nCryo-EM\n\n\n\nNMR\n\n\n\nStructural proteomics\n\n\n\nCrystallography\n\n\n\nSAXS/SANS\n\n\n\nBiophysical characterization\n\n\n\nComputational aspects\, including AlphaFold\n\n\n\nProtein production\n\n\n\n\nThe program also includes student presentations and visits to key research infrastructures. \n\n\n\nPractical details\n\n\n\nThe course begins with three days in Stockholm\, followed by two days in Linköping to complete the first week. SUMMARY:From Messy Data to Clean Datasets: A Practical Introduction to OpenRefine
DESCRIPTION:Messy and inconsistent data is a common challenge in research\, often making it difficult to analyse\, share\, and reuse data effectively. Improving data quality is therefore a key step towards more reproducible research and better alignment with Open Science and FAIR principles. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, we will introduce OpenRefine\, an open-source tool designed to help researchers explore\, clean\, and transform messy tabular data. OpenRefine is particularly useful for working with spreadsheets and datasets containing inconsistencies such as duplicate entries\, varying formats\, or typographical errors. \n\n\n\nWe will begin with a short introduction to the types of data challenges OpenRefine can address\, followed by a live demonstration showing how to work with real data. Beyond method development\, she is also committed to the democratisation of machine learning for the life science community\, contributing open source tools such as ilastik and PlantSeg. She is an ELLIS scholar and a scientific co-coordinator of the Horizon Europe project AI4Life. SUMMARY:The PROMISE Initiative: Accelerating Cancer Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Cancer encompasses more than 200 distinct diagnoses\, each with widely varying prognoses\, from highly treatable to very poor outcomes. Advances in molecular analysis hold great promise for diagnostics and therapies\, enabling more precise and effective approaches tailored to individual patients with cancer. Sweden has excellent cancer registries and biobanks of the highest quality\,and there is now a need to join forces to exploit our unique advantages to the benefit of cancer patients. SciLifeLab platforms support the generation and analysis of data in both genomics and other omics technologies. \n\n\n\nThe goal of the conference is to expand the PROMISECancer consortium\, promote its efforts\, and continue building the Swedish cancer community. PROMISE Cancer is a part of PROMISE: Precision Omics Initiative Sweden\, which is a national initiative using whole-genome sequencing and multiomics to understand common diseases\, rare diseases\, and cancer.  \n\n\n\nThis conference will focus on the PROMISE Cancer effort led by Swedish scientists representing Stockholm\, Uppsala\, Umeå\, Linköping\, Lund\, and Gothenburg as well as SciLifeLab. \n\n\n\nHere\, we aim to have high-quality national and international speakers from the many areas needed for improved precisionomics. 1: Cancer genomics\, 2: Single cell and spatial transcriptomics and multiomics\, 3: Germline cancer risk and liquid biopsies\, and 4: Functional precision cancer medicine. An additional purpose is to share updates on the progress made within PROMISE Cancer and to encourage broader participation of Swedish cancer researchers. While the current work is primarily focused on preclinical and translational research\, the overarching goal is to translate these findings into clinical practice through collaboration with Genomic Medicine Sweden (GMS).
