SUMMARY:Chemical Biology Seminar Series: "Collaborative drug discovery at NCATS
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging seminar in the Chemical Biology Seminar Series featuring Dr. Matthew D. Hall\, Scientific Director of the Division of Preclinical Innovation at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS)\, NIH. \n\n\n\nShort summary: First\, I will speak about our translational science laboratories at NCATS\, and how we collaborate. I will give some insight into the opportunities and the challenges of working with collaborators. Second\, I’ll describe a recent research project as an example of early drug discovery – a new inhibitor for NNMT (N-nicotinamide methyltransferase). Third\, I’ll touch on challenges and next steps for drug discovery tools – the need to embrace alternative methods (NAMS) and new modalities (such as gene therapy). \n\n\n\nNOTE: We will meet up with individuals who do not have access to SciLifeLab in the reception at 13.50

SUMMARY:Mithrl AI Co-Scientist for Accelerating Biological Discovery.
DESCRIPTION:Vivek Adarsh\, Mithrl \n\n\n\nNBIS and SciLifeLab Data Centre arrange an open SciLifeLab AI Seminar Series aimed at knowledge-sharing about Artificial Intelligence and applications in the Life Science community. The seminar series is open to everyone. The seminar is run over Zoom on the third Friday of the month during academic terms\, typically between 10 and 11 am\, with approx. 45 min presentation and 15 min discussion. \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nDespite the explosion of biological data from sequencing\, imaging\, and high-throughput experiments\, extracting meaningful insights remains slow\, manual\, and heavily reliant on limited bioinformatics resources. Scientists often encounter bottlenecks that delay decision-making and limit the scope of discovery. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, we introduce the concept of an AI Co-Scientist—a set of autonomous agents that collaborates with researchers to analyze data\, generate hypotheses\, and uncover novel insights in minutes rather than months. We’ll explore real-world use cases where AI systems assist with tasks ranging from experimental planning and data preprocessing to functional analysis and scientific interpretation. We’ll also address practical challenges\, including data quality\, trust in AI-generated results\, hallucinations\, and integration into existing research workflows. By the end of the session\, you’ll have a clearer understanding of how AI can partner with scientists to accelerate progress in the life sciences.

SUMMARY:[Spotlight seminar] Beyond Biological Sequence Space
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Klára Hlouchová\, Charles University in Prague\, Czech Republic \n\n\n\nJoin us for an inspiring seminar with Dr. Klara Hlouchová\, whose pioneering work delves deep into the “dark protein space“—the vast universe of unevolved amino acid sequences rarely touched by nature. Her group is using cutting-edge bioinformatics and experimental strategies to explore how early proteins formed using a primitive alphabet of just ~10 amino acids\, and whether such minimal sets could support the folds and functions we see today. This seminar promises not just a glimpse into the origins of the protein world\, but also fresh insights into the evolving logic of the genetic code and protein design. It’s a rare opportunity to connect with prebiotic molecular evolution at its most fundamental level. \n\n\n\nHost: Ilaria Piazza\, Ilaria.piazza@scilifelab.se

SUMMARY:Workshop: How to communicate your research beyond the lab
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to invite you (SciLifeLab community only) to a practical and interactive workshop in Solna focused on how to effectively communicate your research to a broader audience. \n\n\n\nWhy this workshop? As researchers\, we often spend so much time in the details of our work that it can be hard to see what’s most interesting or relevant to someone outside our field. This session is designed to help you identify and frame those stories\, whether for public outreach\, media visibility\, or a strong social media post. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a PhD student\, postdoc\, or research engineer\, this session is especially aimed at those who don’t usually take the spotlight but whose work absolutely deserves it. \n\n\n\nWorkshop themes \n\n\n\n\nWhat makes your research interesting? Learn to identify the “hook” and explain it clearly to a non-scientific audience. Tips on relevant media outlets and news platforms where you can make your voice heard.\n\n\n\nWriting for the general public Practice simplifying complex ideas without dumbing them down.\n\n\n\nSocial media confidenceGet hands-on tips for writing short\, engaging posts (e.g.\, LinkedIn or Bluesky).\n\n\n\n\nFormatShort presentations\, interactive exercises\, and peer feedback in a relaxed setting. \n\n\n\nYou’ll also learn how the SciLifeLab communications team can support your outreach efforts with tools\, channels\, and networks. \n\n\n\nPreparationTo get the most out of the session\, we’ll ask participants to bring a short\, simplified description (max 200 words) of a finding or idea from their research that they’d like to share with the public. \n\n\n\nMore details will follow after registration. \n\n\n\nTentative date: August 28Duration: 1 hourLocation: SciLifeLab Solna (in person)Register here: First come\, first served
