SciLifeLabs handlingsplan för COVID-19 lanserad – med utlysning till forskarsamhället / SciLifeLab COVID-19 Action Plan launched with open call to the research community

Vilka steg tar SciLifeLab i kampen mot coronaviruset? De kan delas in i två huvuddelar – ett program för testning och analys SARS-Cov-2-viruset, och en nationell utlysning i syfte att bekämpa coronapandemin – som presenteras i den nyligen lanserade handlingsplanen.
Handlingsplanen består av två delar: 1) SciLifeLab:s/KAW:s program för testning av SARS-Cov-2-viruset, och 2) Öppen utlysning från SciLifeLab, för att bekämpa epidemin.
Den första delen, SciLifeLab:s/KAW:s program för testning av SARS-Cov-2-viruset, har inrättats som ett resultat av Knut och Alice Wallenberg Stiftelses (KAW) generösa bidrag till SciLifeLab, Karolinska Institutet och Uppsala universitet för att öka kapaciteten för testning och analys av COVID-19. En del av denna finansiering har avsatts till ett antal initiativ koordinerade av SciLifeLab. Dessa initiativ fokuserar på bl.a. provtagning av COVID-19-patienter för analys av sjukdomsutveckling, testning av viruset i nationell samordning med sjukvården, och utveckling av ytterligare test- och sekvenseringsmetoder samt serologiska tekniker.
Den andra delen, Öppen utlysning från SciLifeLab, är en nationell utlysning nu lanserad av SciLifeLab. Den välkomnar förslag från forskare över hela landet och syftet är att skapa ett omfattande, nationellt program för att bekämpa coronaepidemin. Inkommande förslag bör fokusera på koordinering av prover, studier och data, teknologisk utveckling, eller forskningsprojekt. Medan alla förslag kommer att behandlas individuellt, kan vissa av dem komma att slås samman eller koordineras gemensamt för att skapa synergier. Utlysningen finansieras både av SciLifeLab:s nationella medel och av externa källor såsom KAW, och målet är att projekten ska vara igång så snart som möjligt.
“Vi har sett en stor utveckling på SciLifeLab under de senaste veckorna, där forskarcommunityt gått samman på ett anmärkningsvärt sätt för att tillsammans utveckla diagnostiska, terapeutiska och andra metoder för att bekämpa coronaepidemin”, säger Olli Kallioniemi, SciLifeLab Director och professor vid Karolinska Institutet.

What steps are SciLifeLab taking in the battle against the corona virus? They can be divided into two main parts – a program focused on testing the SARS-Cov-2 virus, and an open call aiming on combating the corona pandemic – which are presented in the newly launched Action Plan.
The Action Plan consists of two parts: 1) SciLifeLab/KAW Program for SARS-Cov-2 virus testing, and 2) SciLifeLab Open Call for Proposals, to battle the epidemic.
The first part, the SciLifeLab/KAW Program for SARS-Cov-2 virus testing, has been established as a result of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation’s (KAW) generous grant to SciLifeLab, Karolinska Institutet and Uppsala University to set up COVID-19 testing and analysis capabilities. Some of this funding has been pre-assigned to several initiatives coordinated by SciLifeLab. These initiatives focus on e.g. sampling COVID-19 patients for analysis of disease pathogenesis; testing the virus in national coordination with healthcare; and developing additional testing, sequencing and serology technologies.
The second part, the SciLifeLab Open Call for Proposals, is a call launched nationwide by SciLifeLab. It welcomes proposals from researchers all over the country and the aim is to create a comprehensive national program to combat the corona epidemic. Proposals should focus on coordination of samples, studies and data; technology development; or research projects. While all proposals will be considered individually, some of them may be merged or coordinated jointly to create synergies. The call is funded by both SciLifeLab national funds and external sources such as KAW and the goal is to have projects up and running as soon as possible.
