Call for DDLS Research School Courses to be given 2026
The DDLS Research School (RS) opens the call for courses in topics of relevance for data-driven life science research. The call is open to any researcher with an affiliation to a Swedish university. Here we ask for courses to be given in 2026.
The DDLS RS offers courses and other activities to the DDLS PhD students. The first-year PhD students within the DDLS RS will during 2025 attend the courses (i) Open Science in the Swedish Context (1 hp), (ii) Deep Neural Networks in Life Science Applications (5 hp), and (iii) Principles and tools for FAIR research practices (3 hp). In this call, we ask for proposals of courses that these students can attend during 2026, their second year in the DDLS RS. We encourage you to, if applicable, build upon the learning outcomes of the first-year DDLS RS courses of 2025.
We primarily solicit courses in the set of topics listed below:
- Advanced deep neural network
- Data science visualization
- Advanced machine learning algorithms with life science relevance
- Study design and biostatistics for large data sets
- Systems biology and multimodal data integration
- Unsupervised learning
- Industrial applications of data-driven life science
- Ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of data-driven life science (including sustainability aspects)
- Journal Clubs (Research Area specific)
- You may suggest and motivate other topics
The DDLS RS courses are provided as a program with an intended study order (curriculum), enabling progression within the program. Specifically, the courses in this call will be offered to the DDLS PhD students during their second year. The second year courses will be offered as elective courses, where the DDLS PhD students will be able to choose from 2-4 (exact number to be decided) courses per semester.
The course should:
- Foster the networking within the DDLS PhD student community
- Be at the PhD course level (3rd cycle)
- Encompass 3-5 hp
- Take place on site 4-5 days, likely with digital activities ahead and after the on site session. The on site session should include at least one social event for the participants (e.g., a dinner, possibly w. additional social activities).
- Be given once per year (exceptions may occur) either in the spring or in the fall, and likely during several years, upon agreement between DDLS RS and the course leader
- Be prepared to accept at least 30 and probably not more than 70 DDLS RS PhD students: note that the courses will be elective and the number of students could also be lower than 30
- Be allowed to accept additional PhD students outside DDLS RS; this is decided by the course leader (no additional reimbursement from DDLS)
- If applicable build upon (i) the prerequisites for the DDLS RS courses as specified in the DDLS PhD candidate selection document point 6, available at https://www.lyyti.fi/questions/b8c433050c; and (ii) the learning outcomes of the first-year DDLS Research School courses, see first-year DDLS RS courses of 2025 for course contents
- Provide relevant course material according to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles, as agreed with DDLS RS directors
- Perform a course evaluation after each completed course, and communicate this course evaluation to the DDLS RS directors
Reimbursement:
Each course will be reimbursed by a fixed sum (not yet decided but estimated to be in the range of 75-150 kSEK per course) paid to the course leader’s department. The sum may depend on (i) number of students; (ii) additional extraordinary costs that need to be motivated.
The social activity will be reimbursed with a fixed sum per confirmed participant (amount to be decided).
