The employment will be placed at the Department of biochemistry and biophysics, at Stockholm university. More information about us, please visit: www.dbb.su.se.
Project description
The goal of this project is to further develop the application of cryo-EM to detect and analyze different types of lipid asymmetries in model and biological membranes. The experimental data will be paired with results from molecular dynamics simulations to provide a complete characterization of the biophysical properties of the imaged membranes.
Main responsibilities
The position involves development of both experimental and computational protocols for: (1) preparing liposomes with compositional and/or number imbalance between their leaflets in vitro, (2) imaging them with cryo-EM, and (3) analyzing the raw data to extract structural information for the bilayers. Additional parsing of simulation trajectories may also be performed to facilitate the imaging analysis. The position further involves regular and effective communication of results both within and outside of the immediate research environment, as well as collaboration with other research groups.
Qualification requirements
In order to qualify for a Postdoctoral position, applicants are required to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent relevant degree from another country. The degree must have been completed no later than when the employment decision is made.
Assessment criteria
It is considered an advantage if the doctoral degree or an equivalent degree was completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Under special circumstances, an older degree may also be an advantage. Special circumstances refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. Direct and documented experience with liposome preparation of model membranes and analysis of bilayer structural parameters from cryo-EM data are required. Experience with fluorescence-based characterization of lipid mixtures, including via imaging and spectroscopic methods, are a plus. Willingness to perform or analyze additional computational simulations of lipid membranes is desirable. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as demonstrated ability to successfully collaborate with others, are required. High degree of independence and excellent time management skills are required.
About the employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2026-11-19.
