Sampling of COVID-19 patients for analysis of disease pathogenesis
The aim of this project is to establish longitudinal sampling systems for COVID-19 patients, in order to follow the disease pathogenesis, learn more about the disease and enable targeted treatments. The project also focuses on collecting the samples in a biobank, to make further studies of the virus possible, both now and in the future.

This project focuses on establishing a system for collecting and analyzing blood samples from COVID-19 patients, to learn more about the disease pathogenesis, increase understanding of the disease and enable targeted treatments. In parallell, the effort aims to collect the samples (cells, serum, plasma, DNA, and testing for RNA seq) in a biobank, and linking it to clinical and epidemiological data. The effort was enabled by a donation from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

Coordination of the effort
The samples are collected from COVID-19 patients at the Medical Unit for Infectious Disease and the Intensive Care Unit (IVA) at Karolinska University Hospital. The project is led by Hans-Gustaf Ljunggren (Karolinska Institutet).
Sampling and sample collection is coordinated by Soo Aleman (Karolinska University Hospital). Samples are taken care of at the Center for Infectious Medicine (Karolinska Institutet) and banked in Stockholm Medical Biobank (SMB).
This project is complex and contains practical, regulatory, ethical and patient safety related issues, as well as safety issues regarding sample handling, that need to be adressed. Janne Lehtiö (Karolinska Institutet), Scientific Director at SciLifeLab, coordinates applications for withdrawals from the biobank for analysis with the advanced technologies offered at SciLifeLab.
A steering group, with representatives from the Medical Unit for Infectious Disease and the Intensive Care Unit (Karolinska University Hospital), as well as the Center for Infectious Medicine (Karolinska Institutet), are developing a process for researcher inquiries regarding accessing the test material.

Målet med den här satsningen är att etablera ett longitudinellt system för att provta patienter med covid-19, för att kunna följa sjukdomsutvecklingen, förstå sjukdomen bättre och möjliggöra riktade behandlingar. Projektet fokuserar också på att samla proverna i en biobank, för att möjliggöra fler studier på viruset, både nu och i framtiden.
