1-2 System developer with operational responsibility

Uppsala university, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM)

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS) is looking for a system developer with operational responsibility. The position is located at Navet, the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) node at Uppsala university, in Uppsala, Sweden. The person will be employed by the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) but affiliated with NBIS and SciLifeLab.

ICM is one of the most international, broad and prominent biomolecular institutions in Europe. The department’s research areas are divided into seven research programs, covering everything from cell biology to the biophysics of individual molecules.

NBIS is a national collaboration whose purpose is to provide support for bioinformatics and infrastructure to life science researchers. NBIS is also the Swedish node in the European infrastructure ELIXIR for biological data. NBIS has about 90 experts spread across the country, working in various fields, such as analysis of DNA, RNA, and proteins, systems biology, genetic analysis, mass spectrometry proteomics, and metabolomics. NBIS also provides support in system development and data management.

The system developers consists of about 10 experts who develop and implement tools for large-scale analyses and large-scale data management. You may find more information about NBIS at https://nbis.se/.

Duties: With us, you’ll be working with agile development of software solutions and with user interfaces unique to the field of bioinformatics. Your work will be creative and include supporting researchers with innovative solutions.

The position involves taking responsibility for the whole lifecycle of applications, from initial planning and development to deployment using automated deployment tools and the eventual decommissioning or migration at the end. You will also work in administering our existing systems. There are usually several ongoing projects, meaning that you will have the possibility to develop in a number of programming languages, such as Python, Java and Go. Many of the projects we are involved in are linked to “data sciences”, and there will be opportunities to acquire skills in using related tools and languages (for example R).

Here you will be working closely with other developers, both locally and internationally. You will also be in contact with researchers and other experts in bioinformatics.  We offer a pleasant and dynamic work environment with room for collaborations and independent projects.  Furthermore, we value the exchange of knowledge and we offer time for you to further your own skill development.

You will also participate in contacts with both internal and external users, teach, and contribute to the development of specification of requirements, MVP, estimation of time required, testing, and documentation. In addition, you will be able to contribute to the development of guidelines and frameworks for how NBIS best conducts development.

Requirements: As an applicant, you will have at least a bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer technology, computer science, systems science, or bioinformatics, or documented equivalent competences in one or more of these areas.

The applicant shall furthermore have:

  • Good knowledge and documented experience in one or several current programming languages (Python, C or Java, Go, etc.) and Bash (or equivalent Unix shell).
  • A high level of familiarity with Linux systems and their administration.
  • Several years of documented system development or system administration experience.
  • Being able to express yourself fluently in English both in writing and in speech.
  • Experience of the Git version control utility.
  • Knowledge of virtual machines and application containers.

Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. The applicant shall have the ability to work well together in teams. You should show initiative and have good interpersonal- and communication skills. As a person, you should be flexible and service-oriented. You should also be quality-conscious and goal-oriented.

Additional qualifications: We would like the applicant to have experience of working with standards for information security and systems for sensitive data. Previous work experience from system development within academia, with configuration management, deployment tools, and programming for the web, is extra meriting.

In addition, the following are counted as meritorious:

  • Accustomed to working in physically distributed teams with communication and coordination via electronic tools, such as video conferencing and the like.
  • Knowledge and experience of using systems for continuous integration (e.g. Jenkins, Travis CI).
  • Accustomed to working in close collaboration with customers.
  • Experience of agile development according to e.g. Kanban or SCRUM.
  • Being able to express yourself fluently in Swedish both in writing and in speech.
  • Knowledge and experience of cloud technologies and “cloud-native” such as Kubernetes.
  • Accustomed to working with system management models or other IT support models such as ITIL.
