Bioinformatican to NBIS

Lunds universitet, Medicinska fakulteten & LTH

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has around 44 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Medicine is a part of Lund University, and is responsible for education and research within medicine and healthcare. Our academic programs are closely linked with the healthcare system and are firmly anchored in the faculty’s strong research tradition. Our research spans a broad field within experimental preclinical research, near-patient clinical research and health sciences research. The Faculty of Medicine, with its 1,800 employees and 2,700 students in Lund and Malmö, is a knowledge-intensive meeting place for students, teachers and researchers from all over the world.

LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.

National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS), is a national infrastructure that furthers life science research in Sweden by providing support and developing infrastructure in the field of bioinformatics. We are supporting projects in a wide array of areas such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, statistics, omics integration, data management, systems development, computational expertise and more.

We are now looking for two new members to support Swedish researchers in advanced bioinformatics projects. One position will be affiliated with the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and one with the Department of Immunotechnology at the Faculty of Engineering.

The successful applicants will be integrated in a vibrant bioinformatics team, and will have many opportunities to further improve current skills and develop new skills to keep up with bioinformatics challenges as they emerge.

Work duties
We are looking for experts that will participate primarily in next-generation (NGS) or third generation sequencing (e.g. long read sequencing) data analysis, but also in other types of bioinformatics analyses. The work involves supporting Swedish researchers in this field under a “fee for service” model. The projects will differ in complexity and can involve any organisms, including human/mouse but also non-model organisms. We are specifically looking for experience in expression analyses such as RNAseq (including scRNA), but depending on the expertise of the applicant, projects could also involve genomics and other omics techniques and integration.

Responsibilities include planning, initiating and executing bioinformatics analyses, communication with research groups, staying aware of current developments in the field, writing and communicating results and reports. NBIS experts are also regularly involved in advanced bioinformatics training for the Swedish research community. Regular internal meetings and training opportunities will be part of the work. NBIS also gives time for professional development and the opportunity to learn from a diverse team of NBIS colleagues.

Qualifications
The successful applicants needs to have the following requirements:

  • PhD in bioinformatics, molecular biology, computer science or a closely related field.
  • Long experience (3+ years) in working with next-generation sequencing data analysis or omics-data from other high throughput methods is a must.
  • Experience in expression analyses and the ability to perform such analyses to a high international standard.
  • Proficiency in a scripting language like R or Python
  • Ability to work efficiently in a Linux command-line environment.
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English.

You need to have the ability to independently drive projects forward. NBIS is a service-oriented organisation with a lot cooperation and communication, it is therefore important that you have a good communicative ability and can easily work with others.

Other merits that could be advantagus for the positions are:

  • Experience in integrative omics, cancer-specific analyses, spatial omics or whole genome sequencing data.
  • Experience in application of multivariate and univariate statistics on omics data.
  • Experience of support within bioinformatics.
  • Post doctoral experience
  • Documented knowledge in programming, machine learning and biostatistics.

We will place emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the team and the scientific knowledge within NBIS.

Instructions on how to apply
Applications should include a cover letter stating the reasons why you are interested in the position and in what way the employment corresponds to your qualifications. The application should also contain a CV, degree certificate or equivalent, and other documents you wish to be considered (grade transcripts, contact information for your references, letters of recommendation, etc.).

Other information
The two positions are full time and permanent employment positions starting 2021-11-01 or according to agreement, probationary employment might be applied.
The University applies individual salary setting. Feel free to state salary claims in your application.
