The Department of Medical Sciences (IMV) is a large clinical institution with approximately 250 employees and over 900 individuals affiliated via the University Hospital. The department has a broad research profile with strong research groups in various areas. Research is closely linked to the clinical activities at the University Hospital and includes both fundamental studies on disease etiology and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. The SNP&SEQ Technology Platform at IMV, is part of the National Genomics Infrastructure (NGI) at SciLifeLab in Uppsala. We offer large-scale services in sequencing (NGS), SNP genotyping, and proteomics to users in the Swedish academia, industry, as well as to international users. The operation consists of a multidisciplinary team of researchers, project coordinators, research engineers, bioinformaticians, system developers, and system administrators. Annually, we analyze more than 50,000 samples and generate over 350 Terabases of data for our clients. Data is handled and analyzed on a dedicated cluster designed for handling sensitive data. If you have a strong background in bioinformatics, experience working with sequencing data, and a desire to be part of a dynamic and forward-thinking team, we welcome your application. We are seeking an experienced bioinformatician to work on developing, maintaining, and applying both existing and future tools for bioinformatic analysis in our operations.
Duties
Your responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Developing and implementing data tools and workflows for bioinformatic analyses.
- Analyzing data from internal validations of new laboratory methods, bioinformatic tools, and inter-laboratory comparisons, as well as participating in writing reports on the results.
- Participating in project planning meetings with users and contributing expertise on bioinformatics issues.
- Bioinformatic analyses of sequence and genotype data in service projects.
- Collaboration with UPPMAX, other SciLifeLab activities, and other entities with similar operations.
Requirements
- University degree in bioinformatics, molecular biology, genetics or related field.
- Several years documented work experience in bioinformatics.
- Good knowledge of bioinformatics in genomics and large-scale sequencing (NGS).
- Good programming skills in Python or similar programming languages.
- Proficiency in working in a Linux environment and in HPC systems.
- Experience using Git.
- Ability to handle and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Ability to independently identify and solve problems during data analysis.
- Very good English language skills, both spoken and written.
We are looking for a person who is outgoing, proactive, responsible, detail-oriented, and comfortable working both independently and in a team. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as a positive attitude towards service activities and good collaborative skills.
Additional qualifications
In addition to the qualifications listed above, we appreciate previous experience in one or more of the following areas:
- PhD in genomics, genetics, or a similar area, including bioinformatics work.
- Experience using Nextflow.
- Experience working in a research-oriented service facility.
- Good understanding of how pre-analytical and laboratory methods may affect data quality.
- Quality control and analysis of large-scale genotyping data.
- Experience working in an accredited environment (or equivalent regulation).
- Good understanding of information security and GDPR.
