ONE Postdoctoral Researcher in chemical and genetic screens

The “Cancer Therapy” group at the Karolinska Institutet – SciLifeLab, led by Prof. Oscar Fernandez-Capetillo is looking for postdoc candidates, with proven experience in cell and molecular biology and that want to expand their training towards phenotypic chemical and genetic screens related to cancer and other age-related diseases. Our research combines image-based chemical screenings and CRISPR-Cas9 based genetic screens to find genes or chemicals that can be of help in fighting against age-related diseases currently lacking a cure. Our research group is an international team surrounded by strong national facilities and actively collaborates with other competitive national and international research groups.

Division/Research group

Our group is integrated in the “Genome Biology” Division at Karolinska Institutet, together with other competitive groups that work in areas such as DNA repair, epigenetics, advanced imaging or genomics (https://ki.se/en/mbb/research-division-of-genome-biology). Our own groups´ aim is to capitalize on our expertise in High-Content Imaging to conduct genetic and chemical screens that can help us discover new strategies to combat human disease. At SciLifeLab, our team is surrounded by other world leaders in various biomedical research areas, and has access to national facilities for proteomics, microscopy, next generation sequencing etc.

Your mission

We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist to join our team with a Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or other relevant fields. A background in senescence, cell cycle or DNA damage signaling would be a merit. We are specifically looking for a highly motivated scientist, who aims to complement his/her skills with experience in large chemical and genetic screens and has the capacity to independently develop a scientific research project that relies mostly on cell and molecular biology technologies. In addition, it is expected that the candidate will help in the training of junior group members. Other valuable skills such as writing or presenting capacities or social skills will also be appreciated.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant’s main supervisor, director or equivalent.

Bases of assessment

Scientific merit is the essential basis of our assessment. All applications will be internally reviewed, and the assessment done according to the applicant’s competence (publications, experience, distinctions, and other relevant research merits). The applicant must have a strong background in cell and molecular biology. Experience in cancer research and/or high-throughput imaging and screenings would help but is not a must. Selected applicants will be interviewed at a second stage before making the final decision.

What do we offer?

A creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and interests. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world’s leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote a better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. At KI, you get to meet researchers working with a wide range of specialisms and methods, giving you ample opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience with the various scientific fields within medicine and health. It is the crossover collaborations, which have pushed KI to where it is today, at the forefront of global research. Karolinska Institutet is also a state university, which entitles you to several benefits through our collective agreement.
