System developer for precision medicine to Karolinska Institutet

Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) is a national infrastructure for life science research in Sweden and a collaboration between Swedish universities. Everyone at SciLifeLab is employed at one of the partner universities. Since 2013, SciLifeLab is assigned by the Swedish government to operate national infrastructure, to provide cutting-edge life science technologies and -expertise to Swedish researchers, and to be a top international center for research in health- and environment sciences. SciLifeLab is also hosting a national COVID-19 research program and a new large research program for Data-Driven Life Sciences (DDLS), with eleven partner organizations.
The successful candidate will work at the joint technology-driven innovation milieu for precision medicine established together with Karolinska Institutet (KI), Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset (KS) och SciLifeLab. This joint hub is an important local and national hub to implement novel research technologies and develop data-drive and AI within precision medicine and closely linked to international projects in this field. The employment is at the department of Oncology-Pathology KI, and will be lead through the SciLifeLab Data Centre (DC)in close collaboration with the Data Science Node (DSN) for precision medicine and diagnostics. Specifically, this employment is to establish access to the virtual testing facility to be offered to academia and SMEs internationally: TEF-Health. Through the joint innovation milieu, we aim to coordinate needs for services and support for precision medicine and diagnostics, and to engage with research communities and users within the field on the national level. We strive to make tools, project information, code and data as open as possible with the FAIR principles at the core. SciLifeLab DC is a central unit within SciLifeLab with responsibility for IT- and data management issues, serving the SciLifeLab and the Data Driven Life Science (DDLS) research program. We also work with issues about FAIR data and open science, and in close collaboration with major national and international partners. Working at the Data Centre, you will be at the core of Sweden’s top infrastructure for life sciences and have the opportunity to actively shape how state-of-the-art IT and data science are integrated in Swedish life science research, and help to maximize the scientific impact of the large amount of research data generated at SciLifeLab, KI and used within research also at the clinic.
You will work in a team with researchers, data engineers, data stewards and system developers in a rapidly growing, dynamic and progressive team with a leading role in Swedish and European data-driven precision medicine.
Your mission
We are looking for a motivated and knowledgeable Data engineer specialized towards precision medicine and diagnostics, with placement in Solna. As a data engineer, you are expected to participate in technical development of data services, where you will apply excellence in e.g., software engineering, compute- and storage infrastructure, interfaces, cloud technology, visualization or databases in tools and services designed to strengthen the research field.
In our team, you will develop services to enable research projects for precision medicine and diagnostics, often in collaboration with health care partners both nationally and internationally through the Swedish node of the TEF-Health project. This requires technical solutions with a high level of security, data integrity and interoperability, which need to be developed in coordination with engineers and developers at other organizations. The datasets are often large and complex, which leads to high demands on both software and infrastructure. Solutions for meta data management and -standardization are of special importance, and integration with data from for example biobanks, clinical registries, clinical trials, large scale molecular data and other health data.
Your profile
Qualifications:
This job requires a university degree in a relevant area. In addition is required:
- Documented experience of technologies for, e.g., data storage, meta data management, computational science or visualization
- Documented experience of version control systems, e.g. Git
- Documented experience in Python or other relevant programming languages
- Documented experience from working in Linux based environments
- Fluent in English
Personal suitability will strongly affect the recruitment for this position.
Meriting:
- Knowledge or interest in biomedical research and infrastructure.
- Documented experience from working with virtualization and/or container technologies, preferably Kubernetes and Docker
- Experience of system- and/or user administration for software systems or compute- and storage resources
- Experience from data protection technologies and information security
- Experience from working in agile projects where DevOps is an important part
- Ability to work both individually and in cooperation with personnel in widely different fields.
- Drive and initiative to support and develop data driven life science in Sweden.
