System developer

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are looking for a system developer for a precision medicine and diagnostics data node. Precision medicine and diagnostics is a fast-developing field where integrated data is used to support processes to select best possible treatment for each individual patient. We are now building a data node to accelerate and spearhead the worldwide development of precision medicine and diagnostics, a process where different expertise work in teams to improve future healthcare.

SciLifeLab is a hub for life science research in Sweden and a collaboration between Swedish universities. Everyone at SciLifeLab is employed at one of the partner universities. Since 2013, SciLifeLab is assigned by the Swedish government to operate national infrastructure, to provide cutting-edge life science technologies and -expertise to Swedish researchers, and to be a top international centre for research in health- and environment sciences. SciLifeLab is also hosting a national COVID-19 research program and a new large research programme for Data-Driven Life Sciences (DDLS), with eleven partner organisations.

The successful candidate will work at the Data Science Node for Precision Medicine and Diagnostics of the DDLS program, at Karolinska Institute (KI) and SciLifeLab Data Centre (DC). The four Data Science Nodes of the program, placed at four different host universities, are responsible for bioinformatics support and the development of data services and tools for the four different scientific fields of the program. This DDLS node works specifically with precision medicine and diagnostics to coordinate needs for services and support, and to engage with research communities and users within the field on the national level. Each node is organized locally at its host university and is integrated in a strong environment for research and data within its field.

The node staff will be employed at Karolinska Institutet (KI) and placed at the Compliance & Data Office (CDO), part of the central Research Support Office, at the KI campus in northern Stockholm where SciLifeLab’s Stockholm site also is located. The CDO offers broad support on data management, health data, clinical studies, ethics and compliance to researchers and is now, through the DDLS program, developing more specific support for precision medicine. CDO also coordinates the Research Data Office (RDO), a virtual organisation where research support staff is joined by experts from the university library, the IT department, the archive and legal department – connected to RDO is also national data support expert and structures like the Swedish National Data service. KI also offers close collaboration with regional and local initiatives related to precision medicine, e.g. the collaborative Precision Medicine Centre Karolinska (PMCK) together with Karolinska University hospital and the university wide initiative Data Driven research at KI (DDKI).

The work is led by SciLifeLab Data Centre (DC), the central unit within SciLifeLab with responsibility for IT- and data management issues, serving the SciLifeLab and the Data Driven Life Science (DDLS) research program. We have a national assignment and, for example, operate the Swedish national Covid-19 research data portal. We also work with issues about FAIR data and open science, and in close collaboration with major national and international partners. Working at the Data Centre, you will be at the core of Sweden’s top infrastructure for life sciences and have the opportunity to actively shape how state-of-the-art IT and data science are integrated in Swedish precision medicine and diagnostics research and help to maximize the scientific impact of the large amount of research data generated at SciLifeLab. You will work in a team with researchers, data engineers, data stewards and system developers in a rapidly growing, dynamic and progressive team with a leading role in Swedish data driven life science.

Your mission

KI and SciLifeLab Data Centre are looking for a motivated and knowledgeable System developer specialized towards precision medicine and diagnostics, with placement at KI’s Research Data Office (RDO) in Solna. As a system developer, you are expected to participate in technical development of data services, with a focus on software engineering with methods for DevOps, to strengthen the research field.

In our team, you will develop services to enable research projects for precision medicine and diagnostics, often in collaboration with health care partners. This requires technical solutions with a high level of security, data integrity and interoperability, which need to be developed in coordination with engineers and developers at other organizations. The datasets are often large and complex, which leads to high demands on both software and infrastructure. Solutions for meta data management and -standardization are of special importance, and integration with data from for example biobanks, clinical registries, clinical trials, large scale molecular data and other health data.

Your profile

This job requires a university degree in a relevant area. In addition is required:

  • Documented experience in Python or other relevant programming languages
  • Documented experience of version control systems, e.g. Git
  • Documented experience from working with virtualization and/or container technologies, preferably Kubernetes and Docker
  • Documented experience from working in Linux based environments
  • Fluent in English

Personal suitability will strongly affect the recruitment for this position.
