A “smörgåsbord of feelings”: Florian Rosenberger celebrates €1.5M ERC Starting Grant
Florian Rosenberger receives an ERC Starting Grant, and adds his name to the growing list of fellows at SciLifeLab receiving prestigious grants.

Highly competitive
The European Research Council (ERC) recently announced the winners of its latest Starting Grant competition. A record of 4 807 proposals were submitted, up 22% from 3 928 in last year’s call. 8.8% of the applications now receive funding.
A Starting Grant provides up to €1.5 million over a period of at most five years. Researchers may also apply for additional funding to cover costs such as purchasing major research equipment or accessing large-scale research infrastructures.
A step forward for the community
Florian Rosenberger receives the grant for the project MITOSPACE, Reconstructing temporal trajectories of cellular adaptation and failure in mitochondrial disease. The project seeks to map how mitochondrial diseases unfold in time at the single-cell proteome level. The team is looking for new answers to why these diseases strike some tissues and spare others, using Deep Visual Proteomics.
“What I am personally most excited about is the data we will get. We as biologists are not yet used to looking at cell-type resolved proteomes. It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be a challenge, and hopefully it is a step forward for us and for the community,” says Florian Rosenberger.
Joins an elite group
SciLifeLab has young researchers within two fellows programs to boast about, the SciLifeLab Fellows and the SciLifeLab & Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) Fellows.
Apart from being highly cited – 27,5% of the SciLifeLab Fellows are top cited in their fields, and two of the DDLS Fellows rank in the top 1% globally by citations – they are very successful bringing in external funding and recognition. With Rosenberger’s new grant, 28 highly competitive ERC grants have been awarded to the fellows. In 2025 they brought in around 380 MSEK in external funding.
