Today on April 8, the Minister for Higher Education and Research in Sweden, Matilda Ernkrans, visited SciLifeLab and Karolinska Institutet for briefings on the ongoing initiatives to combat COVID-19, that could be so promptly set up due to the generous donation from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

SciLifeLab’s specialized instrumentation, expertise and national network enabled a rapid shift to coronavirus-focused operations. The efforts now coordinated at SciLifeLab entails extended testing for ongoing SARS-CoV-2 infection and technology development to enable testing to identify individuals that have recovered from COVID-19 – prioritising health care personnel. It also involves research on e.g. disease progression and treatment strategies, as well as biobank initiatives.

“At this point, very few visits can be carried out, but this one felt urgent”, says Matilda Ernkrans. “Witnessing politics, academia and industry come together during this crisis is remarkable. I’m truly grateful for your commitment and engagement.”

Hosts and participants of the visits included SciLifeLab management representatives, Chair of the SciLifeLab Board Carl-Henrik Heldin, Peter Wallenberg Jr, Vice Chancellors of SciLifeLab’s host universities och researchers at SciLifeLab och Karolinska Institutet.
