Our research group investigates marine microbial communities and their fundamental roles in ocean ecosystems. We focus on understanding microbial interactions and elucidating the ecological and biogeochemical functions of marine microbes, with particular emphasis on prokaryotes and their contribution to global biogeochemical cycles.
To address these questions, we combine systems biology with experimental and field-based approaches across a wide range of marine environments. Our work spans co-culture experiments, mesocosms, semi-controlled chemostats, and extensive field campaigns along the Swedish West Coast, the open ocean, and polar regions. We integrate state-of-the-art sequencing technologies, flow cytometry, and exometabolomics with physical, chemical, and ecophysiological measurements of marine systems. By coupling these complementary methods with quantitative modeling, we disentangle microbial interactions and link them to nutrient turnover, food web dynamics, and large-scale environmental patterns in the ocean.
We actively welcome collaborations related to microbial ecology, modeling, bioinformatics, and methodological development. We are also happy to support new connections to the marine research community and to provide information about access to relevant marine infrastructures, fostering interdisciplinary and international research in marine science.
