My research aims to understand the biology of anaerobic eukaryotes including protists and animals using a combination of cultivation-dependent and independent genomics and cell biology. We focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying this specialized lifestyle and predict how this evolved. This work traverses multiple biological disciplines among biological sciences (i.e., evolutionary biology, ecology) with potential to inform applied sciences (e.g., bioremediation, biofuel production).
