Bioinformaticians in advanced Machine Learning and AI

The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. SciLifeLab (SciLifeLab) is a national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is a national resource hosted by Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. The center also collaborates with several other universities.

Main responsibilities

The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) is a 12-year initiative that focuses on data-driven research, to train and recruit the next generation of life scientists and create strong and globally competitive computational and data science capabilities in Swedish life science. The program aims to strengthen national collaborations between universities, bridge the research communities of life and data sciences, and create partnerships with industry, healthcare and other national and international actors.

We are now looking for outstanding experts in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, to support excellent research projects and engage in advanced mentoring and postgraduate training on a national level. As part of our national support teams, you are a fully integrated member of the SciLifeLab Bioinformatics Platform (National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden: www.nbis.se), a unique national infrastructure with over 120 experts providing advanced bioinformatics and data science support, infrastructure and training to the Swedish life science research community, with a strong national and international collaborative network.

The main responsibilities are to:

  • Carry out advanced data analyses within nationally prioritized data-driven life science research projects, with a focus on advanced machine learning and AI.
  • Develop and implement necessary tools and workflows for such analyses.
  • Educate other scientists across Sweden through collaboration within supported projects, consultations, mentoring, and advanced national postgraduate courses.
  • Engage in the strategic development of advanced machine learning and AI at the bioinformatics platform, the DDLS program and SciLifeLab as a whole, in close collaboration with external partners.

Qualification requirements

We are looking for outstanding machine learning and AI experts with experience in areas such as advanced image analysis, data structuring and data integration, and large language models (LLMs) with applications in biological and biomedical research. 

The successful candidate´s should have:

  1. a Ph.D. or similar working experience in Image analysis, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, or equivalent.
  2. Extensive (3+ years) experience of applying and/or developing advanced machine learning and AI methods of relevance for internationally competitive life science research.
  3. Very good oral and written communication skills in English.
  4. Strong skills in cooperation and communication.

Additional qualifications

Relevant postdoctoral studies or equivalent industry experience are a strong merit but not a requirement. Programming knowledge in Python, and experience of data science tools such as Numpy, Pandas or Matplotlib is a merit, as well as experience of using modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and Tensorflow. “Reproducible research” and “FAIR data” are central concepts to us, and we value experience in the development of reproducible code through code sharing platforms, version control, workflow languages and container solutions. Documented ability of responsible and legally compliant adoption of machine learning/AI methods for sensitive personal data is a merit, as well as experience of AI model validation and/or interpretability.

About the employment

This is a full-time, indefinite-term employment with a six-month probationary period. Stockholm University applies individual salary setting. Start date as per agreement.
