Doctoral (PhD) student position in translational lung cancer research

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The research group
The doctoral studies will be conducted in the Cancer proteomics Mass spectrometry (MS) research group headed by professor Janne Lehtiö. The research group is placed at SciLifeLab in Solna, Stockholm.
Proteomics is a research field aiming to study proteins on a systems level by simultaneous analysis of thousands of proteins. We develop MS-based methods for in-depth interrogation of the proteome as well as for functional proteomics and apply these methods in cancer research.
Our aim is to improve personalized cancer treatment by increasing the understanding of cancer biology at the proteome level. This enables the development of novel therapeutic strategies as well as the identification of biomarkers with predictive, prognostic and diagnostic value.
We are currently engaged in multiple method development projects including deep proteomics (HiRIEF-LC-MS), proteogenomics, post-translational modification analysis as well as subcellular localization analysis. In cancer proteomics we apply our methods to analyse clinical samples as well as model systems with a focus on cancers of the lung, breast and leukemia.
To complement the MS-data, we have access to a wide range of state-of-the-art omics and high throughput methods by our close proximity to SciLifeLab facilities. In close affiliation to the research group we also provide access to MS-based proteomics for external users through our core facilities at KI and SciLifeLab.
The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented person for a position within the lung cancer sub-group led by dr. Lukas Orre. Our focus is to study lung cancer in great detail at the proteome level to explore novel therapeutic strategies to improve survival in this deadly disease. Specifically, the student will develop and apply sensitive methods for MS-based analysis of clinical lung cancer samples. Further, the student will apply machine learning methods for classification of lung cancer subtype based on the generated MS-data. Finally, the student will evaluate the applicability and value of the developed clinical proteomics methods in a clinical setting.
The PhD student will be part of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of experts in cancer biology, proteomics, bioinformatics as well as lung oncology. Within this framework, the student will be expected to work through collaboration, as well as individually and with increasing independence during the PhD studies that corresponds to 4 years of full-time studies. Apart from research work, the PhD position includes general and project related research courses, active participation in seminars, participation in writing scientific papers and presenting results at seminars and meetings.

A) General eligibility requirement
You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:
- have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
- have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
- have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement
You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:
– Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Skills and personal qualities
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated candidate to join our team. Applicants should hold a masters’ degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology, biotechnology or another relevant life science or related fields. We place great emphasis on personal suitability. To succeed as a PhD student, it is important that the you have a personal drive and flexible mind to handle the rapidly developing field of proteomics. Since the applicant will work in a multidisciplinary environment the ability to work with other scientist and good communication skills are important. Proficiency in oral and written English is necessary. Excellent and documented laboratory skills in molecular biology and cell culture are required. Previous experience in omics methodology, bioinformatics and experience in programming languages such as R or Python are seen as an advantage.
