The Swedish Museum of Natural History is a government agency with a mandate to promote knowledge, research and interest in our world. It is a prominent research institution and Sweden’s largest museum. For more than 200 years, the museum has been collecting specimens and data and conducting research on life on earth. The collections contain more than 11 million plants, animals, fungi, environmental samples, minerals and fossils. All research and knowledge are shared in the exhibitions, Cosmonova and in activities at the museum and digitally.
SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se) is a hub for life science research in Sweden and a collaboration between Swedish universities. Everyone at SciLifeLab is employed at one of the partner universities. Since 2013, SciLifeLab is assigned by the Swedish government to operate national infrastructure, to provide cutting-edge life science technologies and -expertise to Swedish researchers, and to be a top international centre for research in health- and environment sciences. SciLifeLab is also hosting a national COVID-19 research program and a new large research programme for Data-Driven Life Sciences (DDLS), with eleven partner organisations.
The successful candidate will work at the Data Science Node for Evolution and Biodiversity of the DDLS program, at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM) and SciLifeLab Data Centre (DC). The four Data Science Nodes of the program are responsible for bioinformatics support and the development of data services and tools for the different scientific fields of the program. This node also works to coordinate needs for services and support for evolution and biodiversity, and to engage with research communities and users within the field on the national level. We strive to make tools, project information, code and data as open as possible through SciLifeLab’s national data platform with the FAIR principles at the core. Each node is organized locally and is integrated in a strong environment for research and data within its field. The employment and placement are at NRM and the work is led by SciLifeLab Data Centre.
SciLifeLab Data Centre (DC) is a central unit within SciLifeLab with responsibility for IT- and data management issues, serving the SciLifeLab and the Data Driven Life Science (DDLS) research program. We have a national assignment and operate a range of services for life science data and e-infrastructure. We also work with issues about FAIR data and open science, and in close collaboration with major national and international partners. Working at the Data Centre, you will be at the core of Sweden’s top infrastructure for life sciences and have the opportunity to actively shape how state-of-the-art IT and data science are integrated in Swedish life science research, and help to maximize the scientific impact of the large amount of research data generated at SciLifeLab. You will work in a team with researchers, data engineers, data stewards and system developers in a rapidly growing, dynamic and progressive team with a leading role in Swedish data driven life science.
Work tasks
NRM and SciLifeLab Data Centre are looking for a motivated and knowledgeable System developer to work with services towards the evolution and biodiversity research projects, with placement at NRM in Stockholm.
As a system developer in our team, comprising data stewards, bioinformaticians and researchers, you are expected to participate in the development of data services geared towards the research community in evolution and biodiversity. The development work encompasses both backend and frontend tasks.
We collaborate with national and international infrastructures as well as community-driven research projects. This requires technical solutions to manage often very complex sets of data, developed in coordination with data engineers and developers at other organizations. Solutions for metadata management and standardization are of special importance, as well as integration with various data sources, such as environmental or biodiversity measurements, genetic data from different organisms, large scale molecular data, etc.
Qualifications
This job requires a university degree in a relevant area. In addition is required:
– Documented experience in Python or other relevant programming languages
– Documented experience of version control systems, e.g. Git
– Documented experience from working with virtualization and/or container technologies, preferably Kubernetes and Docker
– Documented experience from working in Linux-based environments
– Fluent in English.
Meriting:
– Knowledge of front-end development including HTML, CSS, JavaScript etc
– Knowledge and interest in supporting research and research infrastructure in biodiversity or environmental science in Sweden
– Experience with technologies for metadata management, metadata standards, FAIR data
– Experience with tools and frameworks for visualization of large-scale scientific data
– Experience of system- and/or user administration for software systems or compute- and storage resources
– Experience from working in agile projects where DevOps is an important part.
As a person, you have the ability to work in cooperation with personnel in widely different fields. You also have drive and initiative to support and develop data driven life science in Sweden.

Start date as per agreement. This is a permanent position with a six month probationary period. Please note that the last year of funding for the DDLS program is 2032.
