Introduction to Data Management Practices

National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS) gives a course in research data management practices. This workshop in Data Management with an updated curriculum is a unique event that provides an introduction to practices for better data management for PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and other employees within all Swedish universities. We also welcome applications from outside of Sweden and from the non-academic sector; for more information, contact us.

Course description

The workshop will introduce important research data management aspects through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on computer exercises. The course is intended for researchers who want to take the first steps towards a more systematic and reproducible approach to documenting, describing and managing research data.

Topics covered will include

  • Open Science and FAIR in practice
  • Organising data, files and folders in research projects
  • Describing data with metadata
  • Documentation using Markdown
  • Publishing data to public data repositories
  • Cleaning tabular data and metadata with OpenRefine
  • Versioning data, documents and scripts (e.g. by using Git & GitHub)
  • Writing Data Management Plans

Format: This workshop runs on-site in Solna, Stockholm. Teaching assistants and instructors will be available throughout the course to help you with exercises and questions.

Course fee

The fee for this on-site training is:

  • 2000 SEK for participants from academic institutions
  • 9500 SEK for participants from non-academic organisations

The fee includes lunches, coffee breaks, snacks, and a course dinner.

Invoices will be sent to the participant’s organisation. If you accept a spot in the course but do not attend (no-show), the full fee will still be charged. Please note that NBIS cannot invoice individuals directly.

Entry requirements

No previous programming experience is required, but you are required to bring your own laptop with the required software pre-installed.

Certification

Participants who attend all sessions and complete the exercises will receive a certificate of participation, outlining the topics covered and the workshop duration. Please note that this course does not offer formal university credits.

Limited Spots Available

The course can accommodate a maximum of 25 participants, and applications will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
