SciLifeLab welcomes new Group Leaders
On February 11, the SciLifeLab Board approved over two hundred SciLifeLab Group Leaders, marking an important step in strengthening the national research community. This follows the launch of SciLifeLab’s new Group Leader nomination process, which was introduced in September 2024 with the aim to ensure a transparent and structured approach to evaluate and formally recognizing key scientific and technological contributors to SciLifeLab’s missions by awarding the Group Leader status.
SciLifeLab plays a crucial role in advancing life science research through national collaboration, and strong scientific leadership is essential to its success. Through the new nomination and evaluation process, SciLifeLab is now continuously open to researchers actively contributing to SciLifeLab’s missions and re-evaluates their contributions and Group Leader status every four years. Following rigorous evaluation in this first open call, 213 nominations have now been approved representing a very strong group of scientists across universities, disciplines and institutions. Together with the SciLifeLab and DDLS fellows and SciLifeLab’s infrastructure faculty, this maintains the total number of faculty in SciLifeLab at about 350.
“I am convinced that a yearly opportunity for group leaders to join SciLifeLab, evaluated by transparent criteria on how they contribute to our missions will be highly valuable to allow SciLifeLab to bring in new talent that drives world-class research, technology development and innovation. The SciLifeLab Group Leader status is not permanent, but will be re-evaluated every four years using the same criteria, promoting turnover in the organisation’s faculty. This is an important step to ensure that SciLifeLab remains at the forefront of cutting-edge research and technology in the long run, and can helpSweden to tackle societal challenges related to health and environment” comments SciLifeLab Director Jan Ellenberg.
