New beta-version of the Swedish Pathogens Portal now available

The Swedish Pathogens Portal has been redesigned to allow for integration of data from multiple sources and aims to better support pandemic preparedness and life science research. A beta-version is now available for further feedback from the research community, which will guide its continued development.

Adapting to evolving research needs

Since its launch in 2020, the Swedish Pathogens Portal has collaborated closely with the life science research community to ensure that the portal meets current and future needs. As research priorities have shifted, the portal has been adapted accordingly. For example, in 2022 the focus of the scientific community shifted from SARS-CoV-2 toward broader pandemic preparedness. In response, the scope of the portal was expanded to include additional pathogens, along with new features to support different types of pathogen data.

Recent community engagement activities have highlighted a demand for further improvements, including increased access to data, more advanced data visualizations, and enhanced support for data submission. Insights from these efforts, including a recent user survey, have helped guide the portal’s ongoing development.

A technical rebuild to support long-term development

To enable more flexible development and long-term sustainability, the portal has been rebuilt using Django. This allows faster implementation of new features and more efficient data integration. The rebuild has been a major undertaking, and the first version of the redesigned portal is now available. The new beta-version is available alongside the existing portal to allow for testing and user feedback. 

“This new version of the Swedish Pathogens Portal represents an exciting opportunity to provide greater access to data and much more advanced data visualizations. We’re very happy to be able to do this for the community, and to contribute to broader efforts at SciLifeLab to support life science research across Sweden,” says Liane Hughes, Project Leader for the Swedish Pathogens Portal.

In addition, the team has implemented a range of improvements to enhance navigation, refine layouts, and consolidate available information. After a short testing period during 2026, the beta-version of the portal will be formally launched, and will fully replace the current version. However, the new version will still continue to evolve, in line with user needs identified through ongoing feedback.

“To ensure that the Swedish Pathogens Portal continues to meet the current and future needs of the research community is a top priority. Close collaboration with researchers has been central to the portal’s success. User engagement will continue to guide our work throughout this transition, and we welcome feedback on the new version,” Liane concludes.
