Genetic test reveals carriers of gene causing skeletal abnormality
The genetic defect causing skeletal abnormalities in Shetland ponies has been identified by researchers at Uppsala University and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). The gene sequencing in the study was performed at SciLifeLab unit NGI-Uppsala. The discovery, published in the scientific journal G3, makes it possible to detect healthy carriers of the mutated gene which will help horse breeders to avoid passing the defect gene on to the next generation.
