SciLifeLab Fellow Daniel Fürth elected to the Young Academy of Sweden

“This year’s election reflects both the breadth of contemporary research and the major societal challenges that science must help us understand and address,” says Elham B. Rostami, Chair of the Young Academy of Sweden.

As a member of the academy, Fürth hopes to contribute to discussions on innovation and research commercialization.

“I hope to contribute to the academy’s work on issues related to innovation, research commercialization and strengthening Sweden’s ability to translate scientific breakthroughs into societal benefit,” he says. “I am particularly engaged in questions surrounding lärarundantaget, technology transfer and how we can create better conditions for international researchers to establish themselves and remain in Sweden.”

“For me, it is important that Sweden is not only an attractive destination for outstanding researchers, but also a place where they have strong opportunities to build long-term careers and contribute to innovation, entrepreneurship and economic growth.”

From psychology to molecular biology

“Throughout my career, I have worked across disciplines and beyond traditional academic boundaries. In my research at SciLifeLab, I work at the intersection of molecular biology and synthetic chemistry, where we develop new molecular tools to measure biological processes that were previously impossible to study.”

Despite being a SciLifeLab Fellow and leading a research group in molecular biology, Fürth has no formal training in either molecular biology or chemistry.

“My undergraduate education was in psychology at Karolinska Institutet, where I was part of the first cohort of a newly established program built around neurobiology. That background has given me a habit of moving between disciplines and seeking new perspectives on scientific challenges.”
